Stephen Curry recently sparked controversy when he changed his bio from “Warriors guard” to “Olympic gold medalist” on his Instagram. While some speculated it could be a sign of his waning loyalty to the franchise, Curry says that it was nothing more than taking pride in his Olympic debut.

Emily Chang: “I’m not asking him why he took the Warriors off his Instagram.”

Ayesha Curry: “Wait, what?”

Stephen Curry: “I was just proud to be an Olympian.”

Emily Chang: “You’re here forever.”

Stephen Curry: “That’s the plan.”

Curry, 36, has been with the Warriors for 15 years now. Since being drafted 7th overall in 2009, he’s been the star of the show and has carried them to four championships. As a 2x MVP, 2x scoring champion, and 10x All-Star, Curry is undoubtedly the greatest Warriors player ever and he’s making a case for being the greatest point guard in NBA history.

So when Steph removed his affiliation with the Warriors on his Instagram last week, it sparked much concern among the fans. In the aftermath of a miserable season, and Klay Thompson’s subsequent departure, the Warriors are not in a good state right now and there was a belief that Steph was growing impatient with the situation.

In reality, Curry was just expressing pride in his latest achievement: winning the gold at the Paris Olympic Games. Despite his status as a legend of the sport, the 4x champion had never suited up for Team USA before this summer’s tournament.

As one of the first players to earn his spot on the team, Steph was able to lock in this offseason to average 14.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. He played a crucial for the USA and he might have won MVP had LeBron James not been at the top of his game all summer long.

Unsurprisingly, Team USA finished first in the tournament and Curry took home his first (and probably last) gold medal. It was the last thing he had to achieve and the 6’2″ superstar felt so good about it that he had to flex the milestone on Instagram.

Regarding his future with the Warriors, recent developments have put to rest any doubts about his loyalty. In a move that nobody saw coming, the basketball legend inked a one-year, $62.6 million extension with the Warriors and further solidified his place on the roster.

Of course, even with Curry’s commitment, the Warriors have a to of ground to make up in the Western Conference. With Klay gone and Draymond Green teetering on another outburst, it will be on Steph once again to carry his team and take them further than they have any business going.

In a Conference with elite clubs like the Timberwolves, Mavericks, and Denver Nuggets, the margin for error has never been so slim and Curry will need as much help as he can get for the Warriors to advance in any meaningful way. In truth, only time will tell what kind of moves the Warriors make but complacency is not an option now given their duty to Curry to be as competitive as possible.
