Looming Spurs Decision On Jeremy Sochan Could Trigger Potential Trade

Jeremy Sochan's eligibility for a contract extension could raise some concerns regarding his future, as the prospect of a potential trade looms.

San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan has been one of the team’s most promising prospects. As a key rotation player, Sochan has developed into a capable two-way player.

With Sochan entering the final year of his contract, the Spurs may consider offering him an extension. Reports suggest he could earn a 3-to-4-year deal worth $60–80 million in total, putting him in a strong position. San Antonio could opt to extend him now or risk restricted free agency next season.

At only 22 years old, the forward has shown notable growth potential, having put up averages of 11.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season. Given his improvement as a three-point shooter, the Spurs may have a strong incentive to retain him.

However, the development of their rookie, Carter Bryant, could create some hesitation to offer an extension right away. Considering Sochan’s trade value and the interest he’s garnered in the market, a sign-and-trade isn’t out of the question.

This situation puts the Spurs in a complex position moving forward. Losing Sochan to free agency could create more complications for their starting rotation and frontcourt depth. In this regard, they may opt to get something of value by packaging him in a trade.

With a deep pool of young talent, San Antonio could leverage their assets to land a star-caliber player. One player that the Spurs have been linked with in the offseason is Boston Celtics superstar Jaylen Brown.

Acquiring Brown could be in the best interests of both teams. As the Celtics continue to shed salary, the Spurs could look to acquire the star to boost their overall roster strength.

To facilitate such a trade, San Antonio would have to package at least three first-round picks along with Sochan. To make the money match, additional pieces such as Harrison Barnes, Keldon Johnson, or Devin Vassell may also be considered.

Adding a star-caliber player could help the Spurs complete their “Big Three”, especially in light of De’Aaron Fox’s recent extension. Although a move of this nature would have several implications, the immediate impact could be considered largely positive.

Another potential target could be Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was also linked to the Spurs in trade rumors.

The situation surrounding the Bucks’ superstar remains unclear. While internal sources claim that the forward has no intentions of leaving, the media currently speculates that Antetokounmpo is monitoring the trade market to facilitate a move.

The Knicks have been presented as a likely landing spot, but the Spurs could make a compelling offer as well.

Similar to the package for Brown, San Antonio may consider including another first-round pick to sweeten the offer. With four first-round picks, two young players, and an expiring contract to complete the deal, the Bucks may see value in accepting such an offer.

Creating a package around Sochan only works if the Spurs are willing to part with their draft capital. In the event of a sign-and-trade, San Antonio could even retain some of its player assets. But the outcome needs to fit the franchise’s current timeline, which is focused on Victor Wembanyama.

Acquiring a superstar at this stage would essentially push the Spurs into a “win-now” mode, which may not be viewed favorably. Given the Spurs’ outlook on Sochan, they may wait until next summer to offer him an extension, depending on his performance.
