Jeff Teague recently shared his thoughts on Kobe Bryant’s playing style during an episode of the ‘Gils Arena’ podcast. Teague’s comments sparked a lively discussion, as he openly admitted that he never enjoyed watching Bryant play, despite acknowledging his greatness and effectiveness on the court.

“It was like rough. It wasn’t smooth to me. When I watch Paul George, I’m not comparing him to Kobe at all. When I’m watching it smooth, it’s like one-two to pull up.”

“KD, jab, one step. It was smooth. Kobe’s was like, jab, get there, ah, pump fake, pump fake, pump fake. Get him off the ground, foul, shot, and one. It was effective. It was a dog. I just didn’t like watching. It didn’t look as graceful to me. That’s all I was saying.”

Teague explained his perspective by comparing Bryant to players like Paul George and Kevin Durant. He pointed out that while George and Durant exhibited a smooth, effortless style, Bryant’s game appeared more laborious and intense.

Teague’s remarks highlight a subjective appreciation for basketball aesthetics. While many fans and players admire Bryant’s meticulous approach and relentless drive, Teague prefers a more fluid and graceful style of play, embodied by players like Durant and George.

Despite his personal preference, Teague did not dismiss Bryant’s effectiveness or achievements. Bryant’s five NBA titles and his reputation as one of the most skilled players in history speak volumes about his prowess on the court. His pump fake maneuver, in particular, was a testament to his extraordinary footwork and attention to detail, making him a formidable opponent.

Interestingly, Teague also revealed a lesser-known anecdote about Bryant. In 2014, as the Los Angeles Lakers were building a championship-contending roster, Bryant suggested acquiring Teague.

However, Teague declined the offer, citing high taxation in Los Angeles as a concern. This decision did not sit well with Bryant, who later confronted Teague during a Lakers vs. Hawks game, questioning whether he was afraid to join the Lakers.

Teague’s refusal led to the Lakers signing Jeremy Lin instead, a move that reportedly did not satisfy Bryant. Despite his dislike for Bryant’s playing style, Teague respected Bryant’s greatness and the impact he had on the game. He acknowledged that while he may not have enjoyed watching Bryant play, he recognized the effectiveness and determination that defined Bryant’s illustrious career.

In the end, Teague’s comments underscore the diverse perspectives within the basketball community. While some admire the smooth and effortless play of certain athletes, others appreciate the intense, methodical approach that defined Kobe Bryant. Regardless of personal preferences, Bryant’s legacy as one of the greatest players in NBA history remains undisputed.
