Former NFL star LeSean McCoy has raised eyebrows with quite a bizarre claim regarding Luka Doncic. On Speak on FS1, McCoy said Doncic is the worst All-Star he has ever seen.
“Luka is the worst All-Star I’ve ever seen in my life,” McCoy said. “He can score the ball, he can pass the ball, he can rebound and all that. He has no effort on defense. He don’t want to play defense. He don’t hustle for no loose balls, he don’t hustle for no loose rebounds.”
“He has no type of urgency of playing solid basketball, and I will not let my son, that wants to be a basketball player…. I will not allow him to watch his tape. I don’t want you to learn from a superstar like that. No hustle. No attitude. No care. Crazy.”

McCoy isn’t questioning Doncic’s skills or abilities here when he calls him the worst All-Star he has ever seen. I’m sure the two-time Super Bowl champion does recognize there have been many worse players than Doncic, who have become All-Stars in the past.
McCoy’s issue was with the effort he saw the Doncic put in during the NBA Finals. The Slovenian did indeed have lapses on defense and his effort was also questioned by many during the series. Would I go as far as to call him the worst All-Star I have ever seen in that context? Probably not.
We have seen a fair few over the years give little effort and have a bad attitude on the court. Unlike Doncic here, they didn’t have any sort of injury excuse either. The 25-year-old was playing through multiple injuries (thoracic contusion, right knee sprain, and left ankle soreness) in the Finals and had to take pain-killing injections to even step out on the court.
Could Doncic still have given more effort? Sure, but I won’t be too harsh on someone for not diving all over the court when they’re clearly not fully healthy. You could also make the case that the injuries impacted the five-time All-Star on defense. He has never been all that mobile and they only made matters worse.
All that being said, Doncic was still the best player by far for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals. He averaged 29.2 points, 8.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 2.6 steals per game against the Boston Celtics while shooting 47.2% from the field.
I certainly wouldn’t place a lot of the blame for the Mavericks losing the series in five games on Doncic. Almost none of his teammates stepped up and even if he was at his absolute best, he was never going to be able to beat a team like the Celtics by himself.
Luka Doncic Reflected On The 2023-24 Season For The Mavericks
The Mavericks were understandably disappointed to end their season on that note, but they could still be proud to have made it as far as they did. Doncic said that as well when reacting to their defeat in the NBA Finals.
“I feel great. We made some great moves. I would say we’ve been together for five months. I’m proud of every guy that stepped on the floor, all the coaches, all the people behind (the scenes). Obviously, we didn’t win the Finals. But we did have a hell of a season. And I’m proud of everyone.”
It will be interesting to see how much better this group can be once they spend some more time together. They are all relatively young except for Kyrie Irving, so you would expect improvement moving forward.
