Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia and Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert aren’t exactly the best of friends, as they head two rival mortgage companies. After Ishbia’s United Wholesale Mortgage passed Gilbert’s Rocket Mortgage in total loan origination volume in the third quarter of 2022, he reportedly rang up a “close counter-party,” and the voicemail he left that day has now supposedly been leaked.
“Hey buddy, hope you’re doing good just wanted to say love ya,” Ishbia said. “We f***ing took those c***suckers down. F*** them, and we’re gonna keep f***ing sticking it to ’em forever. F*** those guys, we’re number one, we kicked the s*** out of them. Brokers No. 1, UWM’s No. 1, you’re No.1, we’re all No. 1 together and f*** them. I f***ing hate them with all my heart and we’re gonna keep kicking their a** every f***ing day, that’s why I was here at f***ing 4 AM again today, I don’t give a f***. We’re gonna keep kicking a**.
Suns owner Mat Ishbia went off on Cavs owner Dan Gilbert's rival business in a leaked voicemail:
"We f**king took those c**ksuckers down. F**k them, and we're gonna keep f**king sticking it to 'em forever. F**k those guys, we're number one."

If this is indeed legitimate, it was quite a rant from Ishbia, who had seen UWM become the biggest mortgage lender in America by passing Rocket. It is well-documented that he has no love for Gilbert, so it certainly wouldn’t be all that surprising to anyone if he did say this.
While Gilbert hasn’t publicly taken shots at Ishbia, it’s clear he isn’t all too fond of him either. In 2023, the NBA Board of Governors approved the sale of the Suns to Ishbia by a 29-0 vote, with Gilbert being the only one to abstain from voting.
Reportedly, Rocket Mortgage also held a sponsorship deal with the Suns when Ishbia was taking over, but he wasn’t going to let that continue. As per ESPN, the deal was set to expire in a few months, but the new Suns owner had it end earlier. As long as these two own the Suns and the Cavaliers, their mortgage companies won’t be doing any business with the other’s teams.
Ishbia and Gilbert both actually grew up in Michigan and attended Michigan State University. While that connection hasn’t helped their relationship, it has hilariously benefited their alma mater, as both men have tried to one-up the other.
Ishbia pledged $32 million to the MSU Athletic Department in 2021, only for Rocket Mortgage to announce a month later that they would be the presenting sponsor for MSU’s basketball team. As you can see, it is quite a rivalry.
Another chapter in this rivalry will be written on Wednesday night when the Suns take on the Cavaliers. Phoenix won the first meeting in Cleveland, and Ishbia would love it if his team could complete the season series sweep here. His Suns are currently eighth in the West with a 44-31 record, while Gilbert’s Cavaliers are third in the East with a 46-30 record.
