Former NBA All-Star Jeff Teague was talking about NBA referee Tony Brothers on his podcast, sharing a story of when Brothers referred to Teague’s mother and aunt as ‘h*es’ when they were sitting courtside at a game.
“I was on the Hawks, and we were playing the Pacers. My momma and my aunt were sitting courtside, and they were cheering every time I came into the game. I was young, maybe my first or second year in the league. Then Tony Brothers pulled me to the side and was like, ‘Who them h*es?’ I lost it. He was apologizing, and I was like, ‘N***a, that’s my momma,’ I started to go crazy. And he like keeps apologizing… When he said that sh*t I went so crazy, I said, ‘I’ll slap the sh*t out of there.’”
Teague went off on Tony Brother, expressing his dislike for his double-faced behavior with the players.
“If you know him, you know he trying to be cool. He’s like, ‘Ah y’all motherf****ers ain’t doing nothing tonight,’ be that kind of person. Then he’ll turn into a h*e in the middle of the game. That’s why CP was like, ‘I called him a TikToker and he tech’d me.’ He’ll do sh*t like that. He’ll try to be cool with you, ‘Ah look at that big booty girl over there’ and then when you be like ‘Aye n***a, call a motherf***ing foul,’ he’s like, ‘Don’t call me a n***a.’ I ain’t f**k with him either. He’s a weirdo.”
“I was on the Hawks & we were playing the Pacers, my momma & my aunt were sitting courtside & cheering everytime I came in the game, then Tony Brothers pulled me to the side & he was like: Who them hoes?”

Teague isn’t the first player to complain about Brothers’ behavior. Many NBA players have previously criticized his officiating style, with players like Spencer Dinwiddie having public animosity for him. He’s not the only official with a distaste for players spilling into their games, given the situation between Scott Foster and Chris Paul.
Referees Are Upsetting Players
We have seen a lot of players and coaches criticize referees in public forums, with some even alleging biased referees are intentionally creating situations to heighten the drama. Dejounte Murray believes this happened to him when he received a technical while sitting on the bench in a game against the Brooklyn Nets. The involved referee? Tony Brothers.
Spencer Dinwiddie and Tony Brothers have had a tumultuous relationship over the last two seasons, with Dinwiddie openly discussing how Brothers’ personal dislike for him leads to him not getting offensive fouls but picking up defensive fouls.
Rudy Gobert had slammed referees in general for not fighting against the imposition of gambling in the leagues through big-money sponsorship contracts from major betting companies. Gobert’s allegations that referees are manipulating games for betting reasons came nearly true when Jontay Porter was arrested for illegal gambling.
The league needs to find a way to fix relations between the players and its referees, or disagreement will continue growing until it reaches an untenable point in the future.
