Luka Doncic played his 65th game of the season in the Mavericks 125-107 win over the Rockets, making him eligible for All-NBA selection. Doncic is widely expected to be a First-Team selection, which will make him eligible for a supermax contract extension worth five years, $346 million, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

Doncic can’t sign this extension until the summer of 2025 to satisfy the requirement of having played seven years in the league to earn the supermax. Doncic has comfortably met the All-NBA requirements, as he’s expected to make his fifth consecutive All-NBA First Team selection this season.

The contract would give Doncic the biggest contract in NBA history, a distinction held by Jaylen Brown currently. He’ll also likely have one season where he makes over $70 million over this deal, which would be another NBA first. His current contract was the rookie max extension which kicked in last season for five years, $215 million. The contract will run till 2026, with an additional year on a player option.

The 25-year-old Slovenian guard is having a career year with the Mavericks, averaging 34.0 points, 9.1 rebounds, 9.8 assists, and 1.5 steals on 48.9% from the field, 38.0% from three, and 78.2% from the free throw line. The Mavericks have won 11 of their last 12 games, with the only loss coming in a game Doncic misses.

Their 45-29 record is good for fifth in the Western Conference, as Doncic is making a late push for MVP by helping the Mavericks shoot up the standings.

Could Luka Doncic Test Free Agency?

Even though Doncic is eligible for this supermax contract in the summer of 2025, there’s no guarantee that he will re-sign with the Mavericks. There have been murmurs of Doncic being unhappy with the franchise because of last season’s playoff miss, but nothing has been real enough to worry the Mavericks that Luka will be leaving.

Doncic will most likely re-sign with the Mavericks when he gets the chance, as the financial value of the supermax will lose a lot of its worth if Doncic signs with a new team in free agency. In addition, the Mavericks have made multiple moves to keep Luka happy. Many people have speculated on Luka wanting to leave, but nothing about his relationship with the franchise’s front office says there’s animosity or distrust.

Dallas has also made moves using picks that would convey after Doncic could leave the franchise. Luka’s player option in 2026 means he could theoretically move elsewhere then, which would make Dallas moving pivots beyond that year a risky proposition. But they’ve moved picks for 2027, 2028 (swap), 2029, and 2030 (swap) already. They seem sure Doncic will be on the franchise for the long haul.

With additions like P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford fitting into the team’s core alongside young players like Dereck Lively II, Josh Green, and Jaden Hardy, Doncic has a bright future to look forward to.
