In an appearance on the ‘Rights To Ricky Sanchez’ podcast, Bucks guard Patrick Beverley revealed the biggest difference between the 76ers (his former team) and the Milwaukee Bucks. According to Beverley, winning is the top priority in Milwaukee, unlike in Philly where it was, apparently, all about the stats.
“Everybody wants to win,” said Beverley. “It’s not about stats, it’s not about numbers here, it’s not about who gets the ball. Everybody here wants to win…”
Beverley didn’t call out the 76ers by name, but it’s hard to believe he’s not pointing to them, given that he was just traded from there after 47 games for the franchise. To Philly’s credit, they were winning a lot of games with Pat Bev on the roster — but there seems to be a difference in how they pursued the championship than with the Bucks.
These are hardly surprising words from the defensive specialist. As a renowned NBA journeyman on his seventh team now, he knows how to make himself heard in the locker room. All the talk lately is likely just his latest attempt to spark some life into his team, and it’s a trick he has used frequently in many of his previous stops, including this past season with the 76ers.
Sadly, the 76ers are falling behind in the title race once again due to another spell of injuries and setbacks — with the most optimistic predictions putting them within the top 5 in the East when Embiid gets healthy toward the end of the season. Underwhelming play has become common for them in the Embiid era and Beverley witnessed first-hand the highs and lows they are so susceptible to experience.
According to Beverley, all that is different now with his new team and he’s embracing every second of it. From day one, Beverley has been vocal about this commitment to winning and the Bucks are matching his energy on all levels. Unfortunately, their recent play on the court remains a serious point of concern among fans and critics alike.
Patrick Beverley’s Rough Start With The Bucks
Defensively, Pat Bev has more than held up his own for the Bucks and he’s been a pest on that end through the first four games. Since his arrival, Doc Rivers has leaned on Bev to put pressure on the opposing backcourt and cover up some of the flaws that Damian Lillard brings on defense. But not even Beverley has been able to stop the bleeding this season and he risks serious embarrassment if the 76ers finish ahead of the Bucks in the standings this year.
All season long, Milwaukee has left experts unimpressed with their play on both ends of the floor and they’ve been even worse this month since replacing their coach. In the Doc Rivers era so far, the Bucks are just 3-7 and on track to lose significant ground in the Eastern Conference. On Thursday, they suffered arguably their worst loss of the season — a three-point defeat to an unrecognizable Grizzlies team currently ranked 13th in the standings.
It goes without saying that this season has been a disaster for the Bucks. Record aside, they are not a championship-contending team at the moment and there are growing doubts that they can ever get it together before the end of the season.
