Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem has expressed his belief that Bam Adebayo deserves the Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) award, making a case for Adebayo’s exceptional defensive skills on a recent episode of “The OG’s Podcast.” Haslem highlighted Adebayo’s ability to guard all five positions effectively, emphasizing that Adebayo’s defensive impact goes beyond just statistics.

“No disrespect to Marcus Smart, no disrespect to anybody else. But there’s nobody in the league that I know that can guard five positions the way that this guy can guard five positions. And not just guard five positions, but actually impact the game and shut a guy down.”

While acknowledging that Adebayo may not lead in traditional box score stats like blocks or rebounds, Haslem emphasized the importance of advanced tracking stats that reveal Adebayo’s effectiveness in defending opponents in isolation and deterring high-quality shots near the rim. The eye test, according to Haslem, supports Adebayo’s defensive prowess.

Despite consistently ranking among the best defenders in the NBA and earning four All-Defensive team honors, Adebayo has yet to win the DPOY award. Haslem mentioned that Adebayo has finished in the top five in DPOY voting for the past four seasons, facing tough competition each year.

This season, Adebayo faces competition from players like Rudy Gobert, Anthony Davis, Chet Holmgren, Joel Embiid, and Jaren Jackson Jr. in DPOY odds. However, since Adebayo’s return from a hip injury, the Miami Heat have improved defensively, ranking sixth in defensive rating after facing strong opponents.

Haslem’s advocacy on his podcast contributes to Adebayo’s case for being a finalist, but more recognition will be needed for Adebayo to secure the coveted DPOY award.

Bam Adebayo Has Not Had A Great Impact On Miami’s Defence

Despite Bam Adebayo’s individual defensive statistics showcasing a strong performance, with a defensive rating of 110.4, 1.1 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game – figures that would place him in the top 20 defenders in the league – the overall impact on the Miami Heat’s defense seems to be falling short of expectations.

Adebayo has also been contributing significantly on the offensive end with career-high averages of 22.0 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, shooting an impressive 50.4% from the field.

However, the collective defensive performance of the Heat tells a different story. The team ranks 13th in the league in defensive rating with 113.9, which is considered decent but not outstanding. The glaring issue arises in the fourth quarter, where Miami’s defense experiences a significant decline.

In the final period alone, the Heat’s defense struggles, ranking 28th in the league with a defensive rating of 120.4. This drop in defensive efficiency during crucial moments in the game, particularly in the fourth quarter, has led to multiple losses for the Heat. The team’s inability to maintain a strong defensive presence late in games has proven costly, reflected in their standings, as they stand 5th in the East with a record of 19-14.

The inconsistency in fourth-quarter defense has had a noticeable impact on the Heat’s overall performance, and it becomes a critical area for improvement if they aim to secure more victories and establish themselves as a formidable force in the league. Despite Adebayo’s impressive defensive contributions individually, the team’s defensive struggles late in games highlight the need for collective adjustments and better execution in crucial moments.
