Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama is the leading candidate for Rookie of the Year this season after his first 26 games. And while there’s a lot to love about the French big man, he’s been far from a perfect player on the court this season. According to Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid, the key to success for Wemby involves letting the game come to him instead of trying to force everything offensively.

“I think, first of all, he has to figure out where he wants to play, whether he wants to be a guard or a big or whatever,” said Embiid, via The Athletic. “Do you want to become KD, or do you want to become me? Not trying to be too critical. Obviously, extremely talented. Right now, there’s so much hype around him, I think he’s trying to live up to the hype. Not KD, or like a version of those guys — you want to combine everything. Right now, I just feel like everything kind of feels a little forced in the way that he’s playing. Which is not bad. Because the only way to get better is to play through it and learn. That’s the only way. You make a lot of mistakes, and you learn.”

Hailed as the greatest prospect since LeBron James, Victor faced unbelievable expectations coming into the league and he’s still working to live up to them. With averages of 18.3 points, 10.6 rebounds, and a league-leading 3.0 blocks per game, Wembanyama clearly has the talent to play with the best. But with the Spurs at just 4-25 on the season he has yet to translate his All-Star play into wins on the court.

How Good Is Victor Wembanyama?

Drafted first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, Victor’s potential is undeniable and he’s already showing flashes of stardom. Standing at 7’4″, Wembanyama is among the tallest players in the league, and his 8-foot wingspan makes him a matchup nightmare on any given night. This season, we’ve been seeing a little bit of everything from Victor, who has demonstrated his skills on both ends of the floor all season long.

Even so, some critics want to see more from Victor, who was drawing comparisons to some of the greatest players ever. This season, without a true point guard, there’s only so much that Wemby can do to keep the offense running but he’s more than holding his own so far despite the rocky start from his team.

Slow Start In San Antonio

The Victor Wembanyama era began with so much hype and excitement but those feelings have died down a lot since the Spurs began their season. As it stands, San Antonio is one of the worst teams in the league and they sit dead last in the West with a 4-25 record. This is obviously not the start that Spurs fans were hoping for and it raises a lot of questions about the future of this franchise.

With no help on the horizon, this season is likely already a wash for this team but they are probably already focused on next season. With a lottery pick incoming and some free-agent targets in the books, the Spurs are due to make some moves this offseason and finally provide some help for their franchise player.
