Draymond Green’s recent on-court altercation, resulting in an indefinite suspension, has further solidified his reputation as a controversial figure in the NBA. As the incidents continue to accumulate, questions arise about the Golden State Warriors’ willingness to retain him.

The NBA trade rumor mill is churning, and a recent proposal by CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn has raised eyebrows. The hypothetical trade scenario suggests sending Golden State Warriors Draymond Green to the Dallas Mavericks, a move that has left many scratching their heads.

Warriors Receive: Dereck Lively II, Tim Hardaway Jr, ‘Lightly Protected’ First-Round Pick

The proposed deal outlines the Mavericks receiving Draymond Green, while the Warriors would acquire Dereck Lively II, Tim Hardaway Jr., and a “lightly protected” first-round pick. Hardaway is having a great season, averaging 17.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists while shooting 42.8% from the field and 39.0% from three-point range.

The Mavericks, currently boasting a 15-8 record and sitting in third place in the Western Conference, have seen significant contributions from their young talent, including 19-year-old center Dereck Lively II, who has averaged 9.0 points and 8.1 rebounds while shooting 73.7% from the field.

Lively has seamlessly complemented star player Luka Doncic and Tim Hardaway Jr. has emerged as a valuable scorer off the bench, positioning himself as a frontrunner for the Sixth Man of the Year. However, the questionable nature of this trade becomes evident when considering the current dynamics of both teams.

In contrast, Draymond Green, who is approaching 34 years old this season, comes with a controversial on-court reputation. Green’s recent suspension for an on-court altercation with Phoenix Suns‘ Jusuf Nurkic has only added to the concerns about his conduct.

While theoretically, Green’s playing style might align well with the Mavericks’ backcourt of Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the potential drama he brings may not be worth the trade. The proposed deal seems to overlook the Mavericks’ current upward trajectory and the valuable contributions of their young and drama-free roster.

As the trade speculation continues, it remains to be seen whether the Warriors would be willing to part ways with Draymond Green, especially in a deal that might not align with the Mavericks’ current success and team dynamics. The NBA trade landscape is unpredictable, but this proposed trade has certainly sparked debates about its feasibility and potential impact on both teams.

Would The Warriors Accept This Trade?

The proposed trade involving Draymond Green heading to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Dereck Lively II and Tim Hardaway Jr. sparks intriguing considerations for the Golden State Warriors. Green, at 34, is a seasoned veteran, while Lively, a promising 19-year-old center, and the 31-year-old sharpshooter Hardaway, offer a significant age contrast. The Warriors stand to benefit from an infusion of youth, aligning with a potential rebuild.

Financially, the trade appears feasible, with contracts aligning more favorably. Green’s $22 million salary this year aligns with the combined salaries of Tim Hardaway Jr. and Dereck Lively II. This financial balance, coupled with the age dynamic, may prompt the Warriors to seriously consider the deal as an opportunity to transition toward a younger roster.

However, the trade could signify the end of the iconic “big three” era, marking a poignant chapter in the Warriors’ history. The trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green has been synonymous with the team’s unparalleled success, making it a bittersweet farewell.

On the Mavericks’ side, the trade proposal might face rejection unless the Warriors sweeten the deal with additional draft capital. Given Lively’s potential as a franchise-caliber center and Hardaway’s valuable contribution, the Mavericks would likely seek more assets to justify parting with such promising players.

In essence, the proposed trade not only hinges on the Warriors’ readiness to embrace a new era but also on the Mavericks’ insistence on securing sufficient value in return. The outcome could shape the trajectories of both franchises, determining whether the Warriors opt for a rebuilding phase while bidding farewell to a legendary trio and if the Mavericks are willing to part with their rising talents for an experienced presence in Green.
