The Los Angeles Lakers went into Cleveland on Saturday night and got a big win, as beat the Cavaliers 121-115. It was a back-and-forth contest for much of the night, but the Lakers edged ahead in the fourth quarter to improve to 10-7 on the season. Their fans were thrilled with this win.
One praised Anthony Davis for his stellar showing.

The much-maligned Anthony Davis was the star of the show, finishing the night with 32 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. Davis had a slow start to the game, but got going in the second half and the Lakers desperately needed this big night from him.
The big man had been ripped for his poor showing in the Lakers’ loss to the Dallas Mavericks last time out and this was a great comeback on his part. Performances like these are what end up frustrating you so much about Davis, however, as he just can’t seem to do it on a consistent basis. If he even put up comparable numbers every game, the Lakers would be sitting at the top of the West.
For the Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell, who was back from injury, was the leading scorer with 22 points to go with 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and a steal. He only shot 4-18 from the field, though, and missed a shot that could have tied the game with under 30 seconds remaining. With this loss, the Cavaliers have now dropped to 8-8 on the season.
The Lakers Won Despite LeBron James’ Rough Night
What made Davis’ big night so crucial, was that LeBron James was having a rare off-night this season. James had 22 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks, but shot 8-23 from the field and 1-9 from beyond the arc. He did connect on two big shots in the closing stages, but it certainly wasn’t his finest hour.
It is a good sign for the Lakers that they can win when he doesn’t have it going, as they have been very reliant on him on the offensive end this season. This was a good way to start their four-game road trip and they’ll face a tough challenge next, in Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Lakers Bench Came Up Big
While Davis was the biggest reason for the win, the Lakers bench really stepped up as well. Coming into this game, the Lakers were 24th in the league in bench scoring at 29.6 points per game on 45.8% shooting from the field.
In this one, they got 38 points on 70.0% shooting, as Austin Reaves, Jaxson Hayes, and Christian Wood delivered. Hayes had 10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 block, while Wood had 13 points and 3 rebounds.
Reaves, meanwhile, had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists, and 2 steals, and was probably the Lakers’ second-best player. He had a rough start to the season but is now playing very well in this role off the bench.
