Where Are The No. 2 Overall NBA Draft Picks Right Now? (From 2010-2020)

Not long ago, we ventured through the 2010s to bring you the whereabouts of every No. 1 overall pick of the decade. With that same sentiment in mind, it is time to update our readers about the No. 2 overall draft picks from 2010-2020 and where they are now. Most of these picks are either actively playing in the league today while a few have moved on to their lives after basketball.

As we go through these 11 No. 2 overall picks from 2010 through 2020, we will break down their NBA careers, their future expectations, and whether they ended up being one of their franchise’s biggest mistakes in recent history. It is safe to say that the following list of No. 2 overall draft picks did not find as much success in the NBA as the No. 1 overall picks but nevertheless, nobody can ever take away that at some point in their careers, they were viewed as a top player in their draft class. 

This is where every No. 2 overall draft pick from 2010-2020 is today.

Evan Turner (No. 2 Overall Pick In The 2010 NBA Draft)

Where He Is Now: Retired

Coming out of Ohio State University in 2010, Evan Turner was seen as one of the top NBA prospects in the entire world. The Philadelphia 76ers would make Turner their second overall pick in 2010 where he would spend the next three-plus seasons averaging 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game.

Turner would be traded to the Indiana Pacers during the 2013-14 season but signed with the Boston Celtics that offseason where he averaged 10.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. From 2017 through 2020, Turner would continue to play in the NBA for both the Portland Trail Blazers and the Atlanta Hawks before retiring following the 2020 season.

These days, Turner can be found hosting one of the better basketball podcasts out there with fellow NBA retiree Andre Iguodala entitled “Point Forward”. Although his NBA career would last just 10 seasons, Turner retired comfortably having made $98.22 million during his career.

Derrick Williams (No. 2 Overall Pick In The 2011 NBA Draft)

Where He Is Now: Free Agent

Derrick Williams left the University of Arizona after just two years which saw him become the Pac-10 Player of the Year and a Consensus All-American. Williams declared for the NBA Draft in 2011 where he was made the second overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Williams would earn All-Rookie honors in 2011-12 averaging 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

Williams would spend two and a half seasons in Minnesota before being dealt to the Sacramento Kings where he spent two more seasons averaging 8.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Williams would then play for the Knicks, Heat, Cavaliers, and Lakers from 2016 through 2018 before retiring and deciding to play overseas in Germany.

Williams would travel around the country playing for Bayern Munich, Fenerbache, Valencia, Maccabi Tel Aviv, and most recently in 2022-23, Panathinaikos where he averaged 6.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. He was released earlier this summer and has not signed with another team since that date.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (No. 2 Overall Pick In The 2012 NBA Draft)

Where He Is Now: Retired

Hailing from the University of Kentucky, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was the first of many Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan would make in his tenure with the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets. Kidd-Gilchrist averaged 11.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in his only year at Kentucky, helping them win a National Championship before becoming the No. 2 overall draft pick in the 2012 Draft.

Kidd-Gilchrist would play seven and a half seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets, averaging 8.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. After seven and a half seasons, he would be traded to the Mavericks where he played just 13 games before calling it a career. At the end of 2020, Kidd-Gilchrist was infected by the COVID-19 virus which left him with a lingering heart issue that he is currently embattled in a $40 million lawsuit over.

Victor Oladipo (No. 2 Overall Pick In The 2013 NBA Draft)

Where He Is Now: Houston Rockets

Victor Oladipo was one of the most exciting college prospects in the entire nation coming out of Indiana in 2013. The Orlando Magic would make him their second overall pick in that year’s NBA Draft. In his three seasons with the Magic, Oladipo would average 15.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.6 steals per game before being dealt to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

After one season with the Thunder, Oladipo was dealt to the Indiana Pacers where he broke out as a superstar in the league. In 2017-18, he earned All-Star, All-Defensive, and All-NBA team honors while also being named the NBA’s Most Improved Player averaging 23.1 points and an NBA-leading 2.4 steals per game. In four seasons with the Pacers, he would earn two All-Star selections and average 20.6 points per game.

Since the end of the 2020 season, however, injuries have plagued Oladipo, preventing him from making any real impact on stops with both the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat. In three years with the Heat, Oladipo played just 54 games and averaged 11.0 points per game on 40.7% shooting. Currently, Oladipo is recovering from a devastating patellar tendon team suffered in 2022-23. In 2023-24, he is earning $9.45 million thanks to a player option he opted into this summer but will likely see little to no time on the court thanks to injury.

Jabari Parker (No. 2 Overall Pick In The 2014 NBA Draft)

Where He Is Now: FC Barcelona

Jabari Parker was hands down one of the best players in the 2014 NBA Draft and was rightfully selected second overall by the Milwaukee Bucks. Things got off to a promising start in his career as he averaged 15.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in four seasons with the Bucks through 2018. Unfortunately, this is where things started to fall apart.

Knee injury after knee injury slowed Parker to a near halt as he made his way to the Bulls, Wizards, Hawks, Kings, and Celtics through 2022. Things got so bad that Parker would play just 63 games from 2019 through 2022, killing any chances that he had of a comeback. After taking a season off in 2022-23, he would sign a deal to join FC Barcelona of the EuroLeague and Liga ACB this summer. In 10 games, Parker has averaged 8.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game with the club.

D’Angelo Russell (No. 2 Overall Pick In The 2015 NBA Draft)

Where He Is Now: Los Angeles Lakers

D’Angelo Russell’s career has come full circle since being drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers second overall in the 2015 NBA Draft. Russell would spend just two seasons with the Lakers averaging 14.3 points, 4.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. After off-court drama between Russell and teammate Nick Young came to a head, Russell was traded from the Lakers to the Brooklyn Nets.

In Brooklyn, Russell would become an All-Star during the 2018-19 season averaging 21.1 points, 7.0 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. He would then be dealt to the Golden State Warriors that summer in the deal that sent Kevin Durant to Brooklyn. After 33 games with the Warriors, Russell would be sent to the Timberwolves where he spent the next three and a half seasons as their starting point guard.

During the 2022-23 season, Russell would be traded from the Timberwolves back to the Lakers. Russell would assume the role of starting point guard for the rest of the season and end up helping the team advance to the Western Conference Finals. Russell remains the Lakers’ starting point guard in 2023-24 and is averaging 17.4 points and 6.3 assists per game through 16 games so far this season.

Brandon Ingram (No. 2 Overall Pick In The 2016 NBA Draft)

Where He Is Now: New Orleans Pelicans

Coming out of Duke University in 2016, Brandon Ingram was a highly sought-after prospect with a Kevin Durant-like skill set that is still evident to this day. The Los Angeles Lakers were the fortunate ones to land Ingram with the second pick where Ingram would spend the first three seasons of his career.

Ingram averaged 13.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in three years with the Lakers before being dealt to the New Orleans Pelicans in the trade that sent Anthony Davis to the Lakers. In his first season with New Orleans, Ingram would become an All-Star and the NBA’s Most Improved Player averaging 23.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game on 46.3% shooting.

Ingram has remained with the Pelicans for the last five seasons becoming one of the best small forwards in the NBA today. Through 12 games played in 2023-24, Ingram is averaging 24.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game on 50.0% shooting.

Lonzo Ball (No. 2 Overall Pick In The 2017 NBA Draft)

Where He Is Now: Chicago Bulls

Leaving UCLA after just one season, Lonzo Ball was already a star thanks to his boisterous father Lavar who had been promoting his sons through the media and his company Big Baller Brand. Ball would be the second pick to the Los Angeles Lakers once again. Ball would struggle in two seasons with Los Angeles before also being involved in the trade that sent Anthony Davis to the Lakers and Ball to the Pelicans with Ingram.

Ball would spend the next two seasons in New Orleans averaging 13.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. After the 2021 season, Ball would sign a free-agent deal with the Chicago Bulls. Ball would last just 35 games before suffering a knee injury that has sidelined him ever since. Multiple surgeries, botched procedures, and setbacks in recovery will also prevent him from seeing the court in 2023-24 much to the ire of Bulls fans everywhere.

Marvin Bagley III (No. 2 Overall Pick In The 2018 NBA Draft)

Where He Is Now: Detroit Pistons

Marvin Bagley III was supposed to be the next big thing in the NBA after a promising freshman season at Duke University in 2017-18. Bagley would be picked second overall by the Sacramento Kings. Over the next three seasons, Bagley would average 13.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game with the Kings. Unfortunately, clashes with management and coaching staff would see Bagley traded during the 2022 season to the Pistons.

In the last two and a half seasons, Bagley has played just 75 games with 38 starts for Detroit averaging 12.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. In 2023-24, Bagley has appeared in 15 games for the 2-13 Pistons, mostly in a bench role. He is currently averaging 11.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game on 59.1% shooting for a franchise that has seemingly forgotten how to win games.

Ja Morant (No. 2 Overall Pick In The 2019 NBA Draft)

Where He Is Now: Memphis Grizzlies

From the moment that he was selected second overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2019, Ja Morant was destined to be a star. In his first season with the team, Morant would win Rookie of the Year honors averaging 17.8 points and 7.3 assists per game for a rising Grizzlies team destined to compete at the top of the Western Conference.

Over the next three seasons, Morant’s development reached astronomical levels. In 2022, he became an All-Star for the first time as well as the NBA’s Most Improved Player averaging 27.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game. He was also honored with an All-NBA Team selection.

In 2022-23, things would start to go awry for Morant. Despite being an All-Star averaging 26.2 points per game, Morant found himself in constant hot water for his actions off the court. He would be investigated for several incidents including the assault of a minor and brandishing a firearm in a parking garage while on the road against the Indiana Pacers. He would then be investigated once more for showing a firearm on his social media which resulted in a suspension for the team. Morant is now serving a 25-game suspension in 2023-24 for brandishing a firearm once more on his Instagram Live video this summer. The 3-11 Grizzlies are anxiously awaiting his return as are the NBA fans.

James Wiseman (No. 2 Overall Pick In The 2020 NBA Draft)

Where He Is Now: Detroit Pistons

The final No. 2 overall pick we are going to break down for you is James Wiseman. In 2020, the Golden State Warriors gambled on Wiseman in the NBA Draft, desperately in need of a productive big man with LaMelo Ball still on the board. That gamble would not pay off. After a rookie season that saw him average 11.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, Wiseman would suffer a knee injury that cost him the entire 2022 season and the Warriors’ championship run.

Amid his return, Wiseman struggled and Warriors fans were relentless in their criticism of the third-year big man. In 21 games, Wiseman averaged 12.7 points and 8.1 rebounds before being traded to Detroit in a massive 4-team deal. After appearing in 24 games for Detroit in 2022-23, Wiseman remains with the team to this day. He has seen a significant drop in time on the court, appearing in just eight games for 11.3 minutes per game thus far.
