LeBron James broke the 39000-point barrier during the Lakers win over the Utah Jazz earlier this week. While he didn’t react to the achievement immediately after the game, he did show off on Instagram by making a very strong observation about how his critics tried hurting his reputation as a scorer his entire career.
“Ironically, that pass-first guy you guys talk about is the all-time scoring leader and it’ll never be touched!”

Many people believe James’ scoring record will never be touched, especially by any of the players in the NBA right now unless they manage to match James’ incredible prime for over 20 seasons. Luka Doncic is one player who could make a dent in the record, but it doesn’t look like even he will be motivated enough to play that long.
Let’s give you just one example of how good LeBron James is. He scored more points than Stephen Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo combined, which is absolutely incredible given Curry and Giannis have both played 10 seasons or more and are two-time MVPs each.
Is LeBron James Gunning For 45,000 Points?
Everyone knows LeBron has his eyes on reaching 40,000 points, an achievement he could wrap up this season, provided he can stay on the floor with good health. He’s already at 39,038 points and would need under 40 games, with his current scoring average of 25,7 points per game this season.
James’ business partner and close friend Maverick Carter congratulated James on Instagram by sharing their intention to see LeBron retire after scoring 45,000 points.
“We going for 45K. We didn’t come this far to come this far!”

To reach 45,000 points, will be a real challenge for LeBron James, but it is still possible. If he can play four more seasons (at least 65 games) with 19.2 points per game for each season, he will get to 45,000 points.
Given his possible desire to also play with his younger son Bryce James, we may actually see LeBron play that many more seasons. If he does that, the scoring record will be out of reach for future generations unless major rule changes make scoring easier.
Technically, James has already surpassed 45,000 points over his NBA career if his playoff points are counted. James has 8,023 playoff points, bringing his career total to 47,061 points.
LeBron James Reaching To Be The Greatest Scorer In League History
LeBron James is not far away from being remembered as the greatest scorer in all of basketball, statistically. With his career total of 47,061 points, this means he’s just over 2,500 points away from basketball’s all-time scoring record held by Brazilian legend Oscar Schmidt.
Schmidt put up 49,737 points over the course of his professional career. His statistics and numbers are often looked at with the same mythic lens people use for Wilt Chamberlain’s incredible performances before the advent of regularly televised NBA games.
James has an outside chance of chasing the record down this season (playoff included). He’s currently 2,676 points behind Schmidt, requiring him to average over 26.7 points over his next 100 games. With his season average dipping below that mark, it’s likely we’ll see him smash the record down next season, provided he stays healthy.
