After comparing his exit from the Memphis Grizzlies to relations with an ex-girlfriend, Dillon Brooks sparked all kinds of outrage within the NBA community. Among the latest to speak up is former NBA champion Tony Allen, who challenged Brooks’ claim that the Grizzlies are regretting letting him go this summer.

“You the same chick,” said Allen. “I just saw what LeBron just did to him too. He gave him 37/9/8, he’s still over there getting his a*s bust. We ain’t miss nothing!”

Brooks’ biggest rival last season was LeBron James, who he went out of his way to challenge before being defeated in the 2023 playoffs. In their most recent matchup this week, Brooks played pretty well with 24 points and 4 steals, but he was no match for LeBron, who finished the game with 37 points, 8 assists, and 3 steals on 73% shooting from the field. While LeBron and the Lakers gave Dillon a fat L this season, it’s nothing compared to what happened in Memphis last year, when Brooks led the Grizzlies on a massive collapse down the stretch of the season.

What Happened In Memphis?

Dillon Brooks’ villain arc did not happen overnight. In fact, he was viewed pretty favorably by most fans leading up to the 2022-23 season. But when the Grizzlies started to win last season, it sparked something new in Brooks, who took up his trash talk to another level. As the Grizzlies dominated the West, Brooks and Ja Morant developed heightened confidence that many across the league felt was premature.

When it came time to back up their talk and prove themselves as a legitimate contender in the West, the Grizzlies fell flat in almost every possible way. Against the Lakers in round one, Memphis looked hopelessly outmatched. LeBron sent them home in six games. The aftermath of the series was so brutal that Dillon Brooks was essentially kicked off the team and mocked relentlessly for weeks before catching fire for Team Canada in the FIBA World Cup.

Revenge Tour In Houston

For many, the thought of Dillon Brooks being worth his $80 million contract was a long shot at best, but he’s proving to be that kind of player in Houston this season. In fact, as it stands now, Brooks is currently one of the best role-players in the entire NBA with averages of 13.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game on 50.0% shooting from three. His offense and defense have been huge for the Rockets, who have emerged as one of the early surprise teams this season at 6-6 through 12 games.

With a solid showing on both ends, the Rockets have been a pretty good team in the West this season and as much as Tony Allen might try to deny it, Dillon Brooks has been a huge part of their success. If he can keep this going and sustain this level of play, Dillon will change the narrative about his career, and he can finally shut up the haters once and for all. Most importantly, the Rockets can have a breakout season, just like the Grizzlies did years ago with Brooks, Ja, and Jaren Jackson Jr.
