Forward Kevin Durant was traded to the Phoenix Suns ahead of the 2023 trade deadline, and there’s no doubt that many now have championship expectations for the squad. A lot of fans felt that they wouldn’t have won the 2023 championship due to the team’s relative lack of chemistry, but all of them expect to compete in 2024.

Recently, we saw Kevin Durant get real on the championship expectations for the team, with the superstar noting that the team will “get pounced on” if they fall short.

“I always feel like we should be winning every game. A championship is always the goal… we’ll see what happens. Obviously, if we don’t win the title, we’ll get pounced on.”

The amount of talent on the Phoenix Suns roster is staggering. Aside from Kevin Durant, the team also has stars Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. They comprise one of the most potent offensive trios in the league, and scoring is unlikely to be a problem for them.

During the playoffs with the Phoenix Suns, Kevin Durant averaged 29.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game, while shooting 47.8% from the field. It will be interesting to see how he does next season after an offseason to acclimate to his teammates.

Kevin Garnett Believes The Phoenix Suns Are Devin Booker’s Team, Not Kevin Durant’s

Even though most people would agree that Kevin Durant is the best player on the Phoenix Suns, there are some who think that title is actually Devin Booker’s. In fact, Kevin Garnett is one of the people who think the Suns are Booker’s team, not Durant’s.

“I don’t think the responsibility is on KD. I think this is Booker’s team. This is definitely Booker’s team. Hell yeah. This is Booker’s team and this is everybody in the cast coming to support him. That’s straight up. KD ain’t trippin’. Guess what, they double Booker? You’re going to leave KD? You’re not leaving KD. KD wants that.”

Kevin Durant is not a selfish player and has often been willing to take a backseat and cede control of the offense to others. Durant can thrive in any situation, whether he is on or off the ball. It is true that the attention Devin Booker commands will create a lot more room for Durant to operate offensively, and that is likely why Durant wanted to move to Phoenix in the first place. We will see who ends up being the true No. 1 option on the team, but Durant will thrive no matter what role he’s in on the Suns.

Kevin Durant Should Have A Productive Season With The Phoenix Suns

The current iteration of the Phoenix Suns is offensively comparable to the dynastic Golden State Warriors from a talent standpoint. The squad has two superstar-level players in Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker, an elite third option in Bradley Beal, and quality role players around the roster. They have enough to win the championship next season.

With that being said, the Suns have to focus on building a lot of chemistry this season. We have seen talented teams fail because stars did not know how to co-exist, and that is the one pitfall the Suns will have to avoid. The team also should try to stay as healthy as possible by the time the playoffs roll around, and health is paramount in the postseason.

Hopefully, we will see the Phoenix Suns find success in the future. They are certainly one of the best teams in the league, and with Kevin Durant, they are a true championship contender.
