• Anthony Davis is aiming to play 82 games for the Lakers this season
• Davis has not played more than 62 games in a season for the Lakers
• The league has a 65-game requirement for awards consideration
Anthony Davis is targeting a career-high in games played as the Lakers center hopes to come close to the 82-game mark this season. Provided he doesn’t get injured, fans should be extremely excited after his proclamation during media day.
“It’s my goal every year to play 82. I didn’t do anything didn’t different from last summer. Took some time off, got back in the lab, ready to get started. Nothing’s changed, every year I come out and try to help the team win. I am a big piece of the team, and me being on the floor, definitely helps us.”

Davis is the defensive anchor for the Lakers and at worst, the second option on offense. With comments about him also improving his jump shot, it’ll be fascinating to see if AD can come out and be an MVP candidate this season. The Lakers will definitely want him to find that gear in his play, so LeBron James‘ workload is reduced.
Anthony Davis Is The Face Of The Lakers
Commercially, LeBron will be the face of the Lakers until he decides to leave the franchise. But he doesn’t need to keep leading the team with the workload he has had in recent seasons. Davis looked like he could step into that role and help the Lakers win through the late-season winning streaks that helped them finish above .500 and make the Western Conference Finals.
LeBron has already declared publicly that he thinks Davis is the face of the franchise now. AD averaged 25.9 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks last season, seemingly regressing offensively, especially in the playoffs.
His defensive dominance could have put him in contention for DPOY if he had a healthy season under his belt. This year, competing for that award should be a primary goal of Davis, who is one of the best defenders of his generation but hasn’t gotten credit for the same.
The Lakers are expected to be title contenders this season, parlaying a successful end to the season in a very strong offseason that saw them make multiple additions. If the pieces all click together, the Lakers are in for a year where they’ll arguably have one of the best duos in James and Davis along with a deep roster that has nearly 12 rotational players.
