  • Draymond Green loved Jordan Poole’s trash-talking when he was a rookie
  • Green stated that Poole would make his teammates mad as he wouldn’t shut up
  • Draymond said it reminded him of himself when he was a rookie

Years before Draymond Green infamously punched Jordan Poole during practice, it turns out he was a big fan of the youngster’s trash-talking. Back in 2019, Green spoke glowingly of Poole, whom the Golden State Warriors had selected with the 28th pick that year, for not keeping his mouth shut and going at his teammates.

“Man, he don’t stop talking,” Green said. “He does not stop, which is funny to me. So, I see people get p***ed off in practice. Like, ‘Oh man, he a rookie.’ I’ve heard a few people say, ‘He a rookie. He never shut up.’ And I just be sitting there like, ‘Good job young fella, you got ‘em mad.’ I remember being that rookie that wouldn’t shut up and everybody hated it. So, doing something right, young fella. Keep going. I just walk away smiling. It’s great.”

If only Draymond walked away smiling during that practice session.

Clearly, something changed in the years that followed, where Poole’s comments really got on Green’s nerves as well. We still don’t know what exactly led to the four-time All-Star throwing that punch, but it had to be something Poole told him.

One can also perhaps make the case that Green enabled this kind of behavior from Poole, and it came back to bite both of them in a way.

Draymond Green Spoke About Punching Jordan Poole

The Warriors never really recovered following that punch and then failed to defend their title last season. Poole was traded to the Washington Wizards not long after, and Green finally opened up a bit more on the incident after his departure.

Draymond addressed the punch on Poole and stated he isn’t the type to go around hitting people. The 33-year-old indicated that the situation had been building up over time and that Poole said some things that day, that shouldn’t have been said.

One day we will find out exactly what happened between the two of them, but it is still some time away, I think.

It’ll be very interesting to see what happens when the Warriors take on the Wizards on December 22nd.

Poole’s Teammates Weren’t The Only Ones Annoyed With His Trash-Talking As A Rookie

Poole seems to have earned quite a reputation around the league for his trash-talking. Damian Lillard said he does not like Poole as he talks an awful lot during games.

Lillard revealed that during Poole’s rookie season, the youngster was talking trash to him, even though the Blazers star wasn’t saying anything. As Poole kept talking, Lillard told him to shut it, but Poole wouldn’t.

Lillard got his revenge the next time the teams played. He had a slow start which caused Poole to start talking and Dame then proceeded to score 60 on the Warriors to lead the Blazers to victory.

If Poole was talking so much as a rookie, who only averaged 8.8 points, 2.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 0.6 steals per game, one can only imagine how much worse it might have gotten as he kept improving.
