- The Phoenix Suns traded Cam Payne to the San Antonio Spurs this offseason
- He has now claimed he misses being with the Phoenix Suns
- Cam Payne says the Suns could have won the championship with him still on the team too
The Phoenix Suns traded Cam Payne and a 2025 second-round pick to the San Antonio Spurs earlier during the offseason for a protected 2024 second-round pick. He had been with the Suns for three years, playing backup point guard to Chris Paul as they made their Finals run in 2021.
Cam Payne was a bench player, but he had integrated nicely into the Suns. With the team going all in on winning now, though, it was time for him to be moved on. But the player doesn’t seem to agree with that.
“Man I love Phoenix bruh, I miss Phoenix already,” Payne said on Instagram Live. “I wish I was in Phoenix still. It is what it is, man. They tryna win the chip and I respect… I feel like they could have won a chip with me, though. Cuz I’m tough for real.”

These are bold words from Cam Payne, although he may be more right than he knows. The Suns made a big splash by trading for Bradley Beal this offseason, but they now no longer have a pure point guard that can start. The plan seems to be for Booker and Beal to play make, and that might cost them in the playoffs.
Bradley Beal Is Set To Be The Starting Point Guard For The Phoenix Suns
The Pheonix Suns won’t miss the 10.5 points per night that Cam Payne has provided for the last two seasons, but the 4.7 assists per game could become a problem to replace. As of now, the plan is for Beal to be the starting point guard.
“Bradley Beal is expected to enter 2023-24 Suns training camp as the team’s starting point guard, with Jordan Goodwin as a reserve PG, sources say.”
Cameron Payne has the opportunity to play alongside another exciting prospect though. Victor Wembanyama could be the star of the future, and Payne could find a way to become a veteran and a solid piece for a young Spurs team that will have contending ambitions in the next few years. It is sad to see him be traded when the Suns meant so much to him, though.
