- Joe Mazzulla’s Boston Celtics are among the favorites to win the 2024 NBA Championship
- Channing Frye thinks Mazzulla can’t make even one wrong decision next season
- The Celtics have a Big 3 of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kristaps Porzingis
The Boston Celtics made one of the biggest trades of the offseason after acquiring Kristaps Porzingis via a three-team trade with the Washington Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies.
The move made the Celtics a major powerhouse in the league with the Big 3 of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kristaps Porzingis. However, it has also increased the pressure on head coach Joe Mazzulla, per former NBA player Channing Frye.
“I think now that they’ve made some changes, it’s going to give him a little more leeway of understanding what’s happening with the league,” Frye said on Road Tripping’ podcast.
“He’s got to be under a microscope, though, Channing,” Richard Jefferson intervened.
“Oh, trust me,” Frye responded. “I was in Boston. Microscope?! They up in his a**h**e like this. Don’t let him fart wrong. Gone!”

The Celtics are one of the biggest franchises in NBA history. They have 17 championship banners hanging in the rafters, but the organization hasn’t won a ring since 2008. Moreover, they did reach the NBA Finals in 2022, only to get defeated by the Golden State Warriors in six games.
As for Mazzulla, he took the Celtics to the Eastern Conference Finals last season. The C’s pushed the Miami Heat to seven games after being down 0-3. Ultimately, they lost the series 4-3.
Following the addition of Porzingis to the roster, the Celtics have become favorites to win the 2024 NBA Championship.
Danny Ainge Has Confidence In Joe Mazzulla
Joe Mazzulla was initially the interim head coach of the team following the controversial exit of Ime Udoka from the team. He was later given the permanent role.
While many have their doubts about him, former Celtics executive Danny Ainge believes Joe Mazzulla is a better head coach than Ime Udoka.
“You see Joe’s toughness and stubbornness,” Ainge said. “He’s a relentless worker. He has a passion to learn. Joe is a leader, and I think this was a difficult situation with the high expectations the team had coming in. I don’t think there’s anybody there that doesn’t believe that Joe is better than Ime as a coach.”
The 35-year-old led the Celtics to a 57-25 record, which was good enough to be the second seed in the Eastern Conference. It was indeed a great season for a rookie head coach. But anything less than a title in the 2023-24 season would be considered a failure.
