Los Angeles Lakers point guard D’Angelo Russell inked a two-year, $37 million deal with the team this offseason, and his former teammate Patrick Beverley didn’t like the contract terms.
Speaking on his podcast with Russell, the now-Philadelphia 76ers point guard recollected how he sent a message to the latter after his contract extension saying he didn’t like it.
“Congratulations, I didn’t like it. That was my text to him. Cause he deserves more. We’ve tried to map out this thing for the last two years of him getting like a 100 [$100 million] and anything less than that is short.”
He further added:
“So when he signed the contract, and I don’t do this with anybody. When he signed the contract, my response was, ‘Congrats, I don’t like it.’ I just know that when he’s on a team, it’s easy for everybody else. Like that’s the person that you should pay.”

This had both Russell and co-host Rone in splits, although the duo acknowledged that Beverley was right.
The offseason saw the Lakers bring back a major part of their young core comprising of Russell, Austin Reaves, and Rui Hachimura. With Russell set to stay with LA, the team now has a third shooting option after LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
D’Angelo Russell Brought Some Much-Needed Offensive Firepower To The Lakers Last Season
In his 26 games with the Lakers, Russell was an immediate impact dictating the offense, while also contributing heavily to it.
He averaged 17.4 points and 6.1 assists in the regular season, and while his production drastically dipped in the playoffs, his immense contributions in the regular season have the team’s faith intact.
Russell will be joined by former Miami Heat guard Gabe Vincent, who will compete for a starting position. During the playoffs for the Heat, Vincent averaged 12.7 PPG, 1.4 RPG, and 3.5 APG while shooting 37.8% from the 3PT range on 6.1 attempts, and that makes for some competition between the two.
Only time will tell if Beverley’s words of Russell deserving more will hold. The 2023-24 season will be big for Russell and the Lakers as they look to bag their 18th title.
