Chet Holmgren On The Viral Moment When He Crossed Up Stephen Curry At Warriors Star’s Basketball Camp

Chet Holmgren had famously crossed up Stephen Curry with his own move at his own camp in 2019.

  • Chet Holmgren crossed up Stephen Curry at the SC30 Select Camp in 2019
  • The clip went viral and Holmgren’s popularity skyrocketed
  • He says it helped him get used to all the attention that comes with being an NBA player

Chet Holmgren was starting to make some waves in the basketball world after a strong sophomore season at Minnehaha Academy. He followed that up by earning MVP honors at the Under Armour Association AAU tournament but wasn’t quite a household name among basketball fans just yet.

That happened, though in August of 2019 when he attended the SC30 Select Camp held by Stephen Curry. The seven-footer famously crossed up Curry on the first day of the camp and the clip immediately went viral. Holmgren’s fame exploded after that and he recently spoke about it during an appearance on the All The Smoke podcast.

“My internet fame I guess picked up in that moment,” Holmgren said. “The beginning of that AAU season was when the basketball world kinda figured out who I was. I came out of that first tournament under-17s and averaged a triple-double with blocks. So after that, it was kind of an uphill trajectory.

“And then that moment happened and that’s when all the little kids started knowing my name and everywhere I’d go I’d get little people scream my name,” Holmgren continued. “Ask for signatures and stuff which was probably good that I had that early on because I kind of got used to it. Learned how to move, how to deal with it in regular life.”

(starts at 13:31 mark):

You really were left in awe of Holmgren when that clip went viral. To see this 17-year-old seven-footer get the better of Curry using his own move was something special. Clips of high school players doing incredible things on the court tend to go viral from time to time, but not all of those players make it big, as Holmgren has.

Curry Spoke About This Viral Moment Last Year

With Holmgren entering the league last year and with only a few years passing from that epic moment, it wasn’t surprising that Curry was asked about it. He stated it was pretty dope that Holmgren is now in the league as the second pick after that.

“It’s dope… Chet hit me with my own move, little double behind the back… he finished it differently than I would though, I would have just pulled up from 3, he went to the basket and dunked on another dude. It’s pretty dope that he’s now in the league as the No. 2 pick.”

Unfortunately, the two didn’t get to face off in 2022-23 after Holmgren suffered a Lisfranc injury to his foot. The Oklahoma City Thunder big man has made a strong recovery, thankfully and it’s going to be quite exciting when these two get to play each other.

Marion’s versatility as a defender and his rebounding prowess, despite being just 6’7”, impressed Gautam immensely. He admired Marion’s finishing ability at the rim and his shooting, despite an unconventional jump shot, believing that Marion’s skill set would have been even more appreciated in today’s NBA.This transformative experience not only deepened his love for basketball but also shaped his approach to sports writing, enabling him to connect with readers through vivid storytelling and insightful analysis.
