Recent reports hint at ESPN’s next moves, which reportedly involve Doris Burke becoming the first woman TV analyst on the NBA Finals and Doc Rivers landing a gig at the sports network.
Per the New York Post, ESPN is “closing in on promoting Doris Burke to the NBA Finals, hiring Doc Rivers to join her and jettisoning Mark Jackson to the “B” team or off the network.”
In the aftermath of Jeff Van Gundy’s firing in June, the network has its sight set on promoting Burke, while Rivers joins Mike Breen. The report further added that nothing has been finalized, but that’s the direction in which things are moving.
As far as Jackson’s future goes, sources told the Post that he may join play-by-player Mark Jones on the network’s second team. Should that not come through, he could be headed out of the household channel as well.
Is This The End Of Doc Rivers’ Coaching Career In The NBA?
After leading the Boston Celtics to the title in 2008, it has been a rollercoaster ride in the NBA as a coach for Doc Rivers.
While he’s seen a fair amount of success in the regular season with the Celtics, LA Clippers, and the Philadelphia 76ers, he didn’t see another trophy in his cabinet.
Following the Sixers’ semifinal exit this past season, Rivers was fired as the head coach, and weeks earlier, he had spoken about the uncertainty the future came with.
“I don’t know what I’m gonna do,” Rivers told TMZ in an interview. “I’m just gonna enjoy life.”
But it looks like he will be having a career as an NBA analyst, and given his astute knowledge of the game, he will surely be a new and interesting sight with his analysis of the game. As for his return as a coach, that’s something only time will tell.
