• Jaylen Brown has just signed a massive five-year deal worth $304 million with the Celtics
• Former NBA player Brandon Jennings thinks he won’t be with the Celtics when that contract ends
• Jennings predicts Brown will be on the Rockets soon
Jaylen Brown had been eligible to sign a supermax extension with the Boston Celtics since the 1st of July. The fact that no deal was struck as the weeks went by was a bit concerning, but it finally came out on Tuesday that he had signed the richest contract in NBA history worth $304 million over five years.
Despite this long-term commitment here, former NBA player Brandon Jennings believes this partnership won’t last for long. During an appearance on Gil’s Arena, Jennings stated he is expecting Brown, who averaged 26.6 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 3.5 APG, 1.1 SPG, and 0.4 BPG last season, to leave the team soon.
“Probably not,” Jennings said when asked if Brown would finish this deal as a Celtic. “I mean he got his money, he’ll be in Houston soon… he not gonna finish there. For sure, he’s not. Hell no.”
(starts at 14:49 mark):
The reason why Jennings brings up the Rockets is rather easy to understand. Their head coach is Ime Udoka, who coached the Celtics in the 2021-22 campaign. There have also been numerous reports linking Brown to the Rockets, and when there’s so much smoke, there’s certainly a bit of fire.
Could Jaylen Brown End Up On The Rockets After Signing This Deal?
Players wanting to leave their teams despite having signed extensions with them wouldn’t be all that new. Kevin Durant signed an extension with the Brooklyn Nets in 2021, only to request a trade a year later.
It is the same case for Damian Lillard, who extended in 2022 and then requested a trade this year. With Brown having had his name in trade talks on multiple occasions over the years, you certainly wouldn’t blame him for not feeling a great sense of loyalty to the Celtics even after this deal.
If things do go wrong in a year or two, it certainly wouldn’t be a shock to see him want out, but as we see with Lillard, it won’t be easy to end up where you’d want to go. So, while an exit could be possible, getting to the Rockets might prove a bit difficult.
