Just one year ago, the Golden State Warriors were champions of the basketball world and looked to be on the verge of a second run with their star-studded core. Of course, we know how it ended for the Warriors this year: brutal defeat at the hands of a familiar foe (LeBron James).

This summer, as fans and experts look around for someone to blame, Steve Kerr accepted some blame for himself. In a recent interview where he reflected back, Kerr detailed where he fell short in his role as coach of the team.

“I will say that I feel like I failed last year in connecting the group,” Kerr told Shayna Rubin of The Mercury News. “I have taken a lot of time this summer to think about last year, things I could have and should have done differently. I really believe that sometimes losing forces you to reassess and reevaluate and I’m excited about coming back next year with a renewed focus and energy and spirit from the entire group. And that starts with me and I can’t wait.”

Last season was like a nightmare for the Dubs, who struggled to stay consistent through most of it. While Kerr may be partly to blame for the lack of focus, the incident between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole really seemed to break something in the locker room.

Can Warriors Come Back After Lost Season?

With all three stars on the tail end of their careers, the clock is ticking for this version of the team. Unless Golden State makes a big splash via trade or free agency, they’ll only have a few more years with this core and it’s why they spared no expense to ensure they will be competitive next season.

Swapping Poole for CP3 could change everything for this group, but they’ll have to do more if they want to come out on top once again.

“It’s all about adjusting to what’s the reality, right? Like I hate that we lost [Jordan Poole]. I hate that we didn’t achieve our potential last year and every team has to find a way to get better, so the changes were made,” Curry said on a recent episode of the Dubs Talk podcast, via Erin Walsh of Bleacher Report.

It remains to be seen what the future holds in store for Curry, coach Kerr, and the Warriors but only a fool would count them out completely given all that they’ve proven over the past few years.
