Kyrie Irving was facing an important offseason after his stint with the Mavericks ended back in April. As an unrestricted free agent, Irving was open to signing with any team who made an offer, but, in the end, it was only really Dallas who was desperate to pick him up.
Now, with Irving set to stay in Dallas for years to come, the sense of uncertainty has finally gone away, and he can put his entire focus on bringing his best game. A part of that process is a sting in the Drew League this month, and Irving made his debut tonight with a 20-point triple-double.

Irving, 31, is looking to change the narrative about his career after an ugly breakup with the Nets. In the aftermath of several failed runs, Irving demanded a trade in epic fashion and pretty much forced Brooklyn’s hand.
Of course, all of that is in the past now but for Kyrie to silence the haters, he’s going to have to start winning again at the highest levels.
Can Kyrie And Luka Win A Title Together?
Besides bringing back Kyrie and signing some of their rookies, the Mavericks haven’t really done much of anything this offseason and it’s got their fans worried about the future. How will they be good enough to win now when they weren’t even close a year ago?
For the Mavs, however, they know that Kyrie was really their best and only option this summer and they had no alternative but to bring him back and hope for the best.
“Kyrie just loves basketball and loves going to games, so no, I wasn’t concerned about that. But we traded for him because we wanted him to be a long-term piece, you know? And I think Kyrie’s just misunderstood,” said Mark Cuban. “Everybody sees all the noise and everything around him, but when you actually talk to him, I like him. He’s open, he’s smart, he’s always looking to learn things. He’s an interesting guy.”
There’s no going back now for Uncle Drew. The Mavericks are his team now and he’ll have to find some success here if he wants to prove all the doubters wrong. So as great as he was in the Drew League today, Kyrie still has his work cut out for him.
