Dallas Mavericks Expected To Make An Offer To Celtics’ Two-Way Forward In Free Agency

The Dallas Mavericks are looking at a possible free agent out of the Boston Celtics to address a team need this summer.

The Boston Celtics will see changes be made around their team after failing to make it back to the NBA Finals after being widely tipped as the best team in the Eastern Conference.

For a team with some big salaries to pay in the near future, extending Grant Williams is not a priority for the C’s as he enters free agency. The Dallas Mavericks are interested in Williams, according to Mike Scotto of HoopsHype.

“The latest team to have interest in Williams looking ahead to free agency is the Dallas Mavericks, league sources told HoopsHype. It’s worth noting Williams and Mavericks star Luka Doncic are both represented by WME Sports.”

The Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic are also interested in Williams. The Pacers and Magic are also cap space teams, so they can comfortably outbid the Mavericks, who will, at best have the non-tax MLE after re-signing Kyrie Irving and dumping the salary of Davis Bertans by stretch-waiving him to reduce their cap hit for 2023-24.

Are The Mavericks on The Right Track?

If the Mavericks bring back Kyrie Irving, they’ll have to look around the bargain bin and hope some players come to the squad for cheap because they’ll get to play alongside Kai and Luka Doncic. Williams regularly plays like Luka 1’s and has repeatedly praised the Mavericks’ star in interviews, showing he’s definitely appreciative of his game.

Williams is a 3-and-D frontcourt player with questionable consistency. He averaged 8.1 points and 4.6 rebounds last season, with 39.5% from the three. With the elite guard play on Dallas, Williams will definitely be in better spots to score when he gets the ball. His defense may be average to above average league-wide, but he’d instantly be the best defender on the Mavericks if he was to join.

The Celtics can match whatever offer Williams signs, so it may be hard for the Mavs to sign him to an amount that Boston won’t feel comfortable simply matching.
