The Phoenix Suns seem ready to move on from Chris Paul, and right now, it’s hard to say where he will be playing next season. They want to improve the team around Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, and that could mean more depth or even a third star.
Kyrie Irving has an uncertain future being a free agent, despite hints that he might re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks. But now there are talks about a potential trade involving the Suns and Chris Paul.
“If there’s one dreamy framework that could become a reality, let’s not forget Phoenix’s strong overtures to acquire Kyrie Irving — another key point guard of this offseason — before Brooklyn dealt the dazzling ball-handler to Dallas,” Jake Fischer wrote for Yahoo News.
“The Suns backed off their pursuit of Irving and refocused on landing a bigger prize in Durant, but Phoenix officials haven’t just abandoned the interest they held in Irving four months ago. That would require some cooperation from the Mavericks, who have so far signaled little willingness to entertain a possible sign-and-trade for Irving with the Lakers, sources said.
“Dallas, of course, hopes to retain Irving after mortgaging two key rotation pieces plus a 2029 first-round pick to acquire him. But if Irving were to call his shot out of town, perhaps the Mavericks would be more willing to work with a return that netted Paul as opposed to Los Angeles point guard D’Angelo Russell.”
After Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving’s time together with the Brooklyn Nets didn’t end too well, it’s hard to see them teaming up again so soon. But if the Mavericks want a star point guard and Irving wants to go elsewhere, Paul and potentially Ayton being included in a larger deal might just work.
Would A Trade Like This Work Out For Both Parties?
Chris Paul is 38 years old and has a history of being injured in the playoffs. But he could be incredibly effective in taking the pressure off Luka Doncic for 20-25 minutes a game. If the trade is expanded to somehow include Deandre Ayton and Davis Bertans, it would give the Mavericks an inside presence, and the Suns would get a shooter alongside Kyrie Irving.
In a scenario like that, the Mavericks might have to add a player or a pick, but it would give them some good options moving forward. Chris Paul’s contract seems heavy for his production, but it would expire in two years as well. It’s unlikely to happen, but it’s not impossible.
