Danny Green is a three-time NBA champion today. But in his rookie season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Green was far from being exempt from pledging and hazing when on the same team with Shaquille O’Neal. Joining the “All The Smoke” podcast, Green recalled his experiences of being hazed by O’Neal during his rookie years.

“Shaq, he apologizes to this day for how he was,” said Green. “I accept it. But he had me pledging. I had to greet them a certain way.”

The panel couldn’t hold back their laughter at this point. But they remained curious about the nature of the greeting and asked Green to recollect it. He sheepishly responded, “Brother Shaq, I forget the nickname at the time. Brother Mo Williams! And if I messed up, I would get the paddle. They would use a foam roll.”

Green continued to elaborate on his experiences with O’Neal during his rookie season. “He would do weird stuff, man. He would come in the locker room, he’d be showering on his back… Run around b**t a** naked, trying to wrestle. He’s light on his feet, you’d never know he’s coming. He’d just run around and tackle you. B**t a** Shaq… Nah, get away from me, man.”

Shaq was really treating rookies like fraternity pledges 💀

Green was drafted in 2009. Playing with a young LeBron James and an aging O’Neal in the twilight of his career may have been quite the experience for the sharpshooter.

That season, the Cavaliers recorded a dominant 61-21 regular season record, putting them at the top of the East. While viewed as favorites to win it all, the Cavs ended up falling short to the eventual finalists, the Boston Celtics, in the second round. James ended the season as the MVP that year. Meanwhile, O’Neal notched an average of 12.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

Although O’Neal retired just one season later, the NBA legend was still one of the most hilarious and charismatic players in the league. Known for his locker room antics, he was known as a master of mischief. From hilarious pranks played on teammates to bringing out a cellphone in the guise of a shoe, the big man kept the locker room light, making him a beloved individual in every context.

His locker room personality translated to his presence in the media when he started working as a broadcaster with TNT. The pairing of O’Neal and Barkley became an instant fan favorite, showcasing a different side to two NBA legends.

The Lakers legend cultivated his “larger than life” image in his media personality as well as in his approach to life. From expressing his desire to buy a school in his neighborhood to helping a stranger purchase an engagement ring, O’Neal has displayed layers to be himself, showcasing how he remains a well-rounded individual.
