There are no players in the NBA right now more accomplished than LeBron James. As a 4x champion, 4x MVP, 21x All-Star, and 20x All-NBA player, the list of feats stretches far and wide for his career, but James’ success is not limited to strictly basketball. Soon, he will also add a Doctorate to his record after Ohio State announced its plans to honor the basketball legend.

“LeBron James has long said that if he had to attend college, he would have attended Ohio State. Now he’ll be officially recognized as an honorary Buckeye,” wrote the Columbus Post Dispatch. “When Ohio State’s Board of Trustees meets May 21, it will vote to award an honorary degree to the Akron native and all-time NBA great. James will receive a Doctor of Public Service degree for not just his basketball career, but his off-the-court community impact.”

LeBron never went to college, but attendance isn’t necessary for honorary doctorates. The practice is done by schools that wish to recognize an individual’s achievements despite the lack of completion of any formal academic studies. In the case of LeBron James, his achievements cannot be understated.

LeBron’s claim to fame is one of the most successful careers in sports history. Even now, 22 years after he began, LeBron is still one of the greatest players in the world, and his impact stretches well beyond the corners of the court. Through his other ventures in the world of business entertainment, James has built an empire, and he’s used his wealth to give back to the community in the form of the James Family Foundation.

“Born in Akron, Ohio, LeBron Raymone James Sr. is a professional basketball player with a dedication to community engagement and improving the lives of children and families through education, opportunities, and community resources,” wrote the college in a statement. “Just as he’s elevated the game of basketball, LeBron has redefined philanthropy to create a revolutionary model for community building in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.”

LeBron James has established a dynasty for his family with influence in virtually every category on the planet. As one of the richest, most successful athletes ever, LeBron’s fame has transcended traditional norms, but he’s handled it all with grace so far.

In fact, LeBron has poured much of his wealth into helping build up his place of origin: Akron, Ohio. It’s the place where James based his foundation, and it’s also the site of his legendary I Promise school, which has helped enhance the lives of countless kids in the area.

As Dr. James now, LeBron’s legacy is truly unique, and the impact he’s had both on and off the court is undeniable. Even at 40 years old, the King is still finding new ways to leave his mark and share his wealth with those who may never get the opportunity.

Now that the Lakers’ season is over, the King can focus his efforts on recovering his health for one final push, but his days on the court are nearly at an end. Fortunately, James is likely to stay active in the community long after he retires, and his name will forever be tied to the state of Ohio, which is the same place where his stardom began.
