Larry Bird may be remembered as one of the greatest basketball players of all time but he was also capable of having a wild time off the court.
Bird was a notoriously strong drinker, something his teammate Cedric Maxwell found out the hard way, as he once revealed in an ESPN documentary.
(5:00) “Larry, myself, and Kevin McHale went out one time. I’m trying to drink with Larry who’s a two-fisted drinker. So, I drink until I couldn’t drink anymore. We went out to eat in a restaurant and I remember feeling bad. I put my head in the seat and said, ‘I need some water.’ So I drank this big gulp of water and what Larry had done was put a whole bottle of mini vodka in the bottle and that just sent him over the edge. It was so funny to him that I went outside and started feeding the animals.”
It is hilarious that Bird did that to Maxwell, as it could’ve ended badly. Maxwell can find the humor in petting animals on the street, but he may not have remembered the story fondly if he ended up throwing up. Either way, basketball teammates often share deep bonds and it is clear that Bird and Maxwell had a strong relationship.
Larry Bird And Cedric Maxwell On The Celtics
Cedric Maxwell and Larry Bird were teammates for about 6 seasons and ended up winning two championships together. Bird would win one more after Maxwell had left the team, but Maxwell was integral to the success of the early Celtics teams. He was an incredibly clutch scorer and ended up winning the 1981 NBA Finals MVP over Bird, who would win the award after the 1984 Finals for the first time.
Maxwell would average 13.8 points and 6.3 rebounds in his time alongside Bird. Larry was easily the leader of the team, averaging 23.6 points, 10.6 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 1.8 steals over the same time.
Both players have their jerseys hanging in the rafters of the iconic TD Garden, so the teammates left an indelible impact on the game through their contributions.
