Ja Morant’s behavior is a hot topic for discussion around the NBA after he was suspended by the Grizzlies for flashing a gun on Instagram.
Many fans, players, and media members are discussing Ja Morant‘s controversies related to guns recently. There have been some that called for him to be punished heavily, while others have argued that he should be given another shot. Gilbert Arenas has now provided his take on the matter.

Gilbert Arenas started by acknowledging that some of Morant’s behavior is thanks to his age: “When we’re young, we do some stupid sh*t. We do stupid sh*t. We’re trying to pretend like 23 is real old. It’s 23 with a lot of money… There’s gonna be some dumb sh*t that you’re gonna do. Some of us been caught, some of us hasn’t.”
Gilbert Arenas was then asked about what he would do about the situation if he was the owner of the Memphis Grizzlies, and he had a simple answer to that: “If I’m the owner, I’m gonna do what every owner does – pretend I don’t see it.”
Considering that the Grizzlies have already suspended Ja Morant for two games though, it doesn’t seem like their ownership has the same view as Arenas. Morant is the face of the franchise and they cannot have his image be poor. In any case, there might be a bit of bias coming from Gilbert, he had some gun-related issues of his own during his playing days.
Gilbert Arenas’ Gun Incident
Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton got into an infamous altercation over some debts in the Wizards locker room in 2009. The story was recounted by Caron Butler in his book, and it’s hard to believe this happened in an NBA arena.
As Caron Butler wrote in his book, Arenas showed up to practice with four guns two days after the two argued. That led to the following:
“Hey, MF, come pick one,” Gilbert told Javaris while pointing to the weapons. “I’m going to shoot your [expletive] with one of these.”
“Oh no, you don’t need to shoot me with one of those,” said Javaris, turning around slowly like a gunslinger in the Old West. “I’ve got one right here.”
He pulled out his own gun, already loaded, cocked it, and pointed it at Gilbert.
The incident was huge at the time and effectively ended Arenas’ long association with the Washington Wizards and essentially sounded the bell on his career. He revealed later that he is still in touch with Crittenton despite their huge altercation. Considering his history with guns, it’s a bit easier to understand why Arenas has such a lenient take on Ja Morant’s current predicament.
