With an aging supporting cast around Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Boston Celtics may need to explore free agency to bolster their roster and sustain their championship aspirations.

The Boston Celtics entered the 2024-25 season as reigning NBA champions, boasting a league-best 61-21 record and aiming for back-to-back titles. However, their current 0-2 deficit against the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals has raised concerns about the team’s depth and durability.

Key contributors like Al Horford (nearly 39), Jrue Holiday (close to 35), and the injury-prone Kristaps Porzingis (42 games played as he approaches 30) have shown signs of wear, and that is slightly concerning moving forward.

While Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown remain in their prime, the Celtics’ supporting cast may require reinforcements this summer. Even if Boston manages to overcome its current playoff hurdle against the Knicks, the front office must look to free agency for improvement.

The Celtics could target NBA players willing to sign a veteran’s minimum deal or even a mid-level deal if they stay below the second apron. With the goal focused on two-way play and experience, let’s dive into the five NBA free agents who can be game-changers for the reigning NBA champions.

1. Clint Capela

2024-25 Season Stats: 8.9 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 1.1 APG, 0.6 SPG, 1.0 BPG

Clint Capela’s role with the Atlanta Hawks has seen a slight decline, but his efficiency remains noteworthy. Averaging 8.9 points and 8.5 rebounds over 21.4 minutes per game, Capela continues to be a reliable presence in the paint, whether he starts or comes off the bench.

For the Celtics, Capela could provide much-needed depth at the center position, especially considering Al Horford’s advancing age and Kristaps Porzingis’ injury history, or possible departure. His experience and defensive capabilities would be valuable assets, particularly if acquired through a veteran minimum contract.

2. Tyus Jones

Oct 31, 2024; Inglewood, California, USA; Phoenix Suns guard Tyus Jones (21) controls the ball against the Los Angeles Clippers during the first half at Intuit Dome.

2024-25 Season Stats: 10.2 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 5.3 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.1 BPG

Tyus Jones has been a steady contributor for the Phoenix Suns, showcasing his playmaking abilities with an average of 5.3 assists per game. His low turnover rate (1.1 TOV) and efficient shooting (41.4% 3-PT FG) make him a reliable option off the bench.

In Boston, Jones could serve as a dependable backup to Derrick White or Jrue Holiday, providing stability and facilitating ball movement. His experience and composure under pressure would be beneficial during critical playoff moments as well.

3. Gary Trent Jr.

2024-25 Season Stats: 11.1 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 1.2 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.1 BPG

Gary Trent Jr.’s tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2024-25 season showcased his proficiency as a sharpshooter. Averaging 11.1 points per game with an impressive 41.6% from beyond the arc, Trent Jr. provided the Bucks with a reliable perimeter threat.

Notably, his performance in the playoffs was exceptional; in Game 3 against the Indiana Pacers, he scored 37 points, tying a franchise playoff record with nine three-pointers. For the Boston Celtics, integrating a player like Trent Jr. could address the need for consistent bench scoring and perimeter shooting. If available at a reasonable contract, Trent Jr. would be a valuable addition to Boston’s rotation without a doubt.

4. Taurean Prince

2024-25 Season Stats: 8.2 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 1.9 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.2 BPG

Taurean Prince has been a consistent performer for the Bucks, offering versatility on both ends of the floor. His ability to guard multiple positions and knock down perimeter shots (43.9% 3-PT FG) makes him a valuable role player.

In Boston, Prince could provide depth at the forward position, allowing for more flexibility in rotations. His defensive prowess and experience would be assets, particularly in matchups requiring adaptability and resilience. In many ways, Prince would be the perfect wing defender the Celtics could use off the bench.

5. Steven Adams

2024-25 Season Stats: 3.9 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 1.1 APG, 0.4 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Steven Adams has made a commendable return from knee surgery, contributing to the Rockets’ playoff run, which culminated with a seven-game series against the Warriors in the first round. While his scoring has dipped, his rebounding and defensive presence remain impactful.

For the Celtics, Adams could offer physicality and toughness in the frontcourt, traits that are invaluable during the grueling playoff battles. His experience and leadership would also be beneficial in the locker room, and there is no doubt that Celtics fans would appreciate the charismatic big man coming on board.
