As the son of basketball royalty and one of the top prospects in the nation, Bronny James has become a hot commodity in the basketball world.
A senior at Sierra Canyon High School, James is on the verge of making a huge decision about his basketball future and it could have some big implications for his career in the sport.
For now, however, Bronny’s only focus is on picking the site of his pre-NBA home. While several college teams are reportedly in the mix to sign James, the NBL wants the young athlete to consider them as well.
In a recent chat with The Sporting Tribune, NBL commissioner Jeremy Loeliger revealed his desire for Bronny to join.
The Australian NBL wants to sign Bronny James after he graduates from high school this summer and has formally reached out to the Sierra Canyon guard’s representatives.
“We think he’s a prodigious talent,” NBL commissioner Jeremy Loeliger told The Sporting Tribune. “Bronny is NBA bound and he fits into the parameters of our Next Stars program really, really well.
Loeliger described the talks as a “very preliminary back and forth” with only broad details having been discussed until now.
“Just letting them know that we’re here, that we’re interested, and that we actually think it would be beneficial to [Bronny’s] rookie year in the NBA if he spent a season playing against pros in the NBL here in Australia,” Loeliger said.
Naturally, Bronny would be a huge acquisition for the NBL. While they are very popular in Australia and New Zealand, signing Bronny would give them worldwide exposure to a degree they haven’t yet seen.
For LeBron Jr., playing in Australia may not be the best way to test his NBA readiness, but it would definitely help expand his market before his tenure as a pro.
Bronny James Is Not An Easy Player To Recruit
Bronny might consider giving NBL a chance, but the real challenge for the league will be just trying to get a meeting with him in the first place.
“I tried to get involved, but you had to jump through a thousand hoops just to get to the mom. You’re not allowed to talk to the kid. You have to schedule a time on Tuesday or Thursday with the publicist just to talk to the mom.”
Bronny still has plenty of time to choose his next basketball home, but it’s clear that he will have no shortage of options heading into the spring.
We all know where he will ultimately end up, but the path he chooses to get there cannot be taken lightly. Good on Bronny for taking his time and not rushing the process.
