It is often said that the NBA is a guard’s league now and there is just so much talent in those two positions at the moment. It also seems like every season someone emerges as a star in the guard position and this year, it has been Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
SGA is averaging 30.6 PPG on 50.3% shooting from the field so far and is making quite a name for himself. He is certainly going to be an All-Star for the first time this season and there is talk now on how high he ranks among the best guards in the league. NBA Central on Twitter asked a question on who had to go between SGA, Ja Morant, Devin Booker, and Donovan Mitchell and fans were quite divided on the matter.

“I hate to say it, but, it has to be Devin Booker.”
“All really good players but gotta go SGA”
“people gonna say booker but he’s the only one who’s taken his team to the finals”
“Respectfully, it’s not Mitchell or Morant. Cut either one on the right”
“Ja without question”
“So long Booker”
“SGA – only because he hasn’t had to play with any stakes for like 3 seasons. His production likely holds up when the stakes are raised, but I’ve seen everybody else do it as the main guy with higher stakes.”
“rn it’d have to be donavan for me.”
“Ja! He’s all hype and talk when it comes down to it”
“It’s shai… we traded him to a bad team and their still bad”
“There is one guy on here who is both the worst shooter and the worst defender.”
“Booker has to go, I’m sorry”
“Mitchell every day, everyone says booker but just look where the suns are without him”
“Need another All-Star year from SGA for me to put him in the same tier as the other three”
“normally these are somewhat difficult but i think this is pretty obviously dbook”
“Damn this a hard one I’d say Ja”
“Mitchell and I don’t think it’s close”
“Ja. Boy talk too much and ain’t done sh**”
“I’m so sorry Spida your a dog but your my least favorite out this group”
“shai. extremely tough, but recency bias won’t fool me. lemme see him do it in the playoffs”
This really was tough as we saw by the different reactions. It speaks to how good SGA has been that a lot of people would pick him over any of these three. He does need to have another season like this or perform at a high level in the postseason to really establish himself as one of the best guards in the league.
Doc Rivers Admitted He Had Doubts About Trading Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
It is easy to forget now that SGA wasn’t drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Hornets had traded him on draft night to the Clippers in 2018 and he immediately showed flashes back then of the player he has become today. The Clippers ultimately shipped him out to OKC for Paul George a year later and while many at the time didn’t question the trade, they are questioning it now.
Considering the Clippers haven’t won anything and with SGA’s stock on the rise, Doc Rivers was asked about trading him away and he admitted he had doubts about it back then. If this iteration of the Clippers ends up without any silverware, there’s going to be a lot of regret over parting with him in 2019.
