Tracy McGrady had a solid NBA career that could have been a lot better, but injuries and playing on bad teams didn’t make it as good as the shooting guard deserved. McGrady was one of the premiere talents in the league during his best years, destroying rivals with his scoring skills but never being able to go to the Finals and compete for a championship.
He was really close to creating a superteam on the Orlando Magic, but Doc Rivers unsurprisingly blew a big chance to have something great and made Tim Duncan re-sign with the San Antonio Spurs instead of going to Orlando with T-Mac and Grant Hill.
McGrady still managed to make it to the Hall of Fame, but many people wonder if he would have preferred to become a champion over being immortalized in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Tracy McGrady Responds To A Big Question About His NBA Career
During a recent participation on ‘The Pivot’ podcast, the former NBA All-Star opened up on his career, and when he was asked if he would trade his Hall of Fame spot for a championship, he gave an interesting answer.
“Depends on who I am as a player; that means a lot to me. You know what I mean? It depends on who I am as a player. Now, if you’re talkin’ bout prime T-mac, hell yeah. Because I know if I’m prime T-mac to win the championship, then I’m destined for the Hall of Fame, you dig. So absolutely, any day,” McGrady said, via Basketball Network.
“But, if you’re not gonna surround me to be on the championship team, nah, I want the Hall of Fame, I want the Fall of Fame forever. Because in my prime, you didn’t surround me with that, so now I’m chasing at the end? Nah, heck nah,” T-Mac added.
It’s worth noting that he had big rivals during his prime, including the aforementioned Tim Duncan and McGrady’s good friend Kobe Bryant, who always tried to mess up with him during the offseason. T-Mac gave it another shot at the championship in 2013 during the memorable run the San Antonio Spurs had against the Miami Heat.
He was really close to winning the title before a huge Ray Allen 3-pointer shattered his dreams. McGrady seems to be happy with the development of his career, as he ended up enshrined into the Hall of Fame.
