Dwyane Wade experienced the highs and lows of international basketball as a member of the U.S. National team. He had finished with just the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics and the 2006 World Cup before finally winning gold at the 2008 Olympics as a member of the “Redeem Team.”
His son Zaire Wade has followed in his father’s footsteps and became a professional basketball player when he was drafted 10th overall in the G League in 2021. While he hopes to one day play in the NBA, somewhere Zaire won’t be playing is with the U.S. team. He recently stated that he is going to play for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and expressed his excitement at playing for a country that has the same name as him, as the DRC went by the name Zaire at one point.

“I just wanted to say, I am very excited to be able to represent and join the team of the country that has the same name as me. I feel like it’s such a blessing and a big opportunity to be able to represent a country in Africa the DRC. I know how much that name means out there and the origin behind it. Can’t wait to get out there and be able to learn more about where my name came from I know it used to be called Zaire Africa… can’t wait to get out there and be represent the country and do what we do.”
That is an interesting reason, but Zaire probably also realizes that he has a much better chance of playing internationally if he represents the DRC. His professional career hasn’t gotten off to the greatest of starts, and he needs to play more competitive basketball to improve his game. His father has been very supportive of him all this time, and we are sure that the elder Wade would do the same here.
Being A Part Of The Redeem Team Had A Big Impact On Dwyane Wade
The Redeem Team documentary that came out gave us a deeper look into that iconic roster. We had so many big names on the team, but Kobe Bryant really stood out among all the stars. Wade, LeBron James, and Carmelo Anthony were all influenced by Kobe’s work ethic, and they all started training at 5:30 AM like him.
Bill Simmons pointed out how Wade had the best season of his career after the Olympics, as he led the league in scoring at 30.2 PPG. LeBron also won his first MVP that season, while Anthony made it to the Conference Finals with the Denver Nuggets for the first time.
