NBA Insider Drops Harsh Reality About Potential Collin Sexton Sign And Trade To Mavericks: “The Path Is Not There…”

With Collin Sexton and the Cleveland Cavaliers still far apart on agreeing to a deal, teams around the league have been entertaining the idea of making a run for the young point guard.

One such team was the Dallas Mavericks, who were looking at a potential sign and trade for Sexton this summer. Sadly, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, there is no longer hope of that trade happening anytime soon.

(h/t Mavs Moneyball):

“Both sides recognize that the path is not there for a sign and trade,” Fedor remarked when asked directly about talks between the two franchises. Similarly, he said the Jazz and the Heat, two other teams who might be interested in the services of Sexton, were equally unlikely to be able to put together a workable package to move the guard.

Tim Hardaway Jr. is a player many trade-machine-addled Mavericks fans are quick to throw into any potential trade, regardless of fit. Fisher touched on this, adding “THJ, I think… what real use do they (Cleveland) have for such a highly-paid role player/shooter off the bench?”

Sexton, 23, has four years of experience under his belt. As the primary ball handler and playmaker in Cleveland, he was tasked with leading the offense for the Cavs during the 2021-22 campaign. With season averages of 16 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game on 45% shooting, it’s fair to say he did an amicable job.

But after recovering from a meniscus tear on his left knee, there are a lot of questions about how his game will develop and if his athleticism has been impacted at all.

Until he settles the doubts, he’ll likely remain with the Cavaliers. He might just end up accepting the three-year deal they offered him this summer.
