The Golden State Warriors have some big decisions to make this offseason. The Dubs became NBA champions for the fourth time in the last eight years last month, defeating the Boston Celtics in six games, showing that they are anything but done dominating the association.
Following this moment, a lot of questions were raised regarding the Dubs, who assembled a terrific team but wouldn’t be able to keep it together for the future. They already let Gary Payton II, Nemanja Bjelica, and Otto Porter Jr. go, and they might not be the only ones parting ways with the team.
In recent weeks, many reports have touched on the team’s desire to keep both Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole on the roster, but that would be very expensive. They could exceed $200 million in luxury tax, but it seems like they’re willing to do it.
However, not everybody thinks that way. Connor Letourneau of The San Francisco Chronicles thinks that the Dubs will have more options to figure things out but eventually will have to deal Andrew Wiggins to keep Jordan Poole.
“They are expected to sit down with Poole soon to discuss an extension,” Letourneau wrote. “Whether one gets done, though, will depend on just how much money he asks for. If he wants at or near the max, the Warriors might prefer to let things play out and wait until he hits restricted free agency in 2023.”
“By waiting, the Warriors give themselves more options,” he wrote. “Perhaps Wiggins struggles and can be had next summer at a lower rate. Perhaps the Warriors decide they can’t keep both Wiggins and Poole, so they start looking into trade packages involving Wiggins.”
Wiggs and Poole are trying to get a bag, and they seemed pretty confident that the Warriors would give them that. Nevertheless, now the situation could change, with the former No. 1 pick looking like the best candidate to leave the Bay and find a new home in the association. The Warriors have a talented core, but the current rules could force them to get rid of one of their crucial players soon.
