The Luka Doncic trade happened over one month ago, but it continues to be a major story around the country. This week, Southwest Airlines became the latest organization to reference the trade in their latest Instagram post about their new bag policy.

The Dallas Mavericks are known all across the country right now but for all the wrong reasons. This season, they became one of the few teams in NBA history to give up on their franchise superstar at 25 years old, and it’s a decision that generated historic levels of outrage.

The Mavericks are so hated right now in Dallas that even American airline companies are having fun at their expense. Nobody saw it coming and the fans expressed genuine shock online.

“Ooof shots fired, the Mavs getting dragged by Southwest Airlines wasn’t on the bingo card this year lmao,” wrote one fan.

It was a low blow by the airline and some even thought they went too far by trying to troll the Mavericks instead of addressing the root of the problem.

“This is actually really gross and weird,” wrote one X user in a viral post.

Since the city is still actively mourning the Luka trade, some fans believe it’s still too early for any Dallas company to make jokes about it in good faith.

“Not funny when you see the city still mourning! You don’t even have outlets on your flights,” wrote an angry Southwest customer. “I put my phone in low power mode all day before I fly with you!”

Southwest was one of the USA’s most popular airline companies. Since its inaugural flight in 1971, Southwest became known for offering its customers free baggage checks — the last major airline to do so.

Recently, Southwest became subject to scrutiny online after changing their baggage policy to start charging like every other airline. People are outraged and many are claiming that they will take their business elsewhere.

The response from Southwest was not to apologize for the change and reverse course. Instead, the Dallas-based company decided to play on the city’s anger toward the Mavericks, and specifically GM Nico Harrison.

It was Harrison, along with new team owner Patrick Dumont, who ultimately made the call to trade Luka Doncic, the guy who had just brought them to the NBA Finals months prior. He was supposed to be their franchise face for the next 10 years, but they gave up on him without warning while blaming his work ethic and conditioning.

Mavericks fans felt betrayed by the deal and proceeded to riot over the following weeks. They took to the streets to make memorials for Doncic and flooded the arena to make ‘fire Nico’ chants

Even now, all these weeks later, Dallas is still reeling over the trade and many Mavericks fans insist that Nico Harrison can never show his face in the city again.

After trading Doncic, the Mavericks’ situation has only gotten worse. They lost Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving (among others) while having to watch Luka dominate with the Lakers, who are currently ranked fourth in the West at 40-23.

It’s a tough situation for the Mavericks and their controversial trade has drawn criticism from all directions. At this point, they are the laughingstock of the league and unless they go out and win the title, there’s nothing they can do to justify the trade.
