LeBron James is enjoying unprecedented levels of dominance when it comes to individual play despite being in the 19th season of his NBA career. The King is 37 and has had shown no signs of slowing down. Considering that his son Bronny is now in high school and looks set to be a part of the NBA, it’s almost a certainty that LeBron won’t retire before he has a chance to play with his son.
The King has expressed his desire to do as much too, and the possibility of him signing with whatever team drafts Bronny is quite big. While it would be incredible to see a father and son on an NBA court together, former player BJ Armstrong has pointed out that it might not be the ideal situation for young Bronny for one reason. He said on The Hoop Genius Podcast that it might be weird for Bronny to have his father around when he’s trying to spend time with his teammates (via Sportskeeda).
“Me and my son, we do everything together,” Armstrong said. “I got to know my space and place. It’s the NBA, and everyone makes it right. When I think of the NBA, all I can do is smile. It was the most amazing time on the court. Off the court, the fans, people, the experience. I don’t think, when I was 21, I wanted to be hanging out with my dad on the road.
“I think that’s great. … but can you imagine, the fellows want to go out, but your dad’s in the lobby.”
Bronny James is 17 years of age and plays for Sierra Canyon High School, he is set to graduate next year in 2023. That means he will be ineligible to declare for the NBA draft till 2024, a year after his high school graduation is complete.
LeBron James’ current contract runs till 2023, meaning he will be free to make a move as soon as Bronny is ready to join the league. While Armstrong has a point, the historic achievement of playing with one’s father will likely outweigh a year of slightly awkward moments in the dressing room.
