Brian Windhorst Reveals The Reason Why Michael Jordan Agreed To Release ‘The Last Dance’

Michael Jordan’s docu-series ‘The Last Dance’ aired its last episode last Sunday and for the last five weeks, it demonstrated why MJ is widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time. That notion was getting forgotten in the news generations and Brian Windhorst believes that’s the reason why His Airness agreed to the release of the documentary.

The NBA insider appeared on ESPN’s ‘Get Up!’ to talk about the 10-part docu-series, explaining what he believes was the reason why Jordan decided it was time to show the world how he became the GOAT and how his tenure with the Chicago Bulls ended in 1998 after they won their 6th NBA championship in eight years. Windhorst believes LeBron James winning the 2016 NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers played a big role in MJ’s decision about the documentary.

“I do think part of the reason Jordan said ‘yes’ to this documentary… after LeBron won that title, was because maybe for the first time, there was possibly a threat to the throne,” Windhorst said.

Days before the release of the documentary, Mike Tollin, producer of the docu-series, told Ramona Shelburne how and why MJ gave the “go-ahead” to the documentary four years ago.

“The universe has such a funny sense of humor,” Tollin told Shelburne last month. “Because when I woke up, I put on ESPN while I’m getting dressed, and there’s LeBron [James] and the Cavaliers parading through the streets of Cleveland with the trophy that they’d just won.”

Well, if somebody thought there was a threat to MJ’s throne, this documentary probably vanished all of that. Old NBA fans remembered and the new ones learned what was so magical about that No. 23 in the city of Chicago. Michael Jordan was the biggest deal of all. You can make the case for anybody, but after watching ‘The Last Dance’, one wonders how many people still believe he’s not the GOAT.
