- The Los Angeles Lakers signed Christian Wood to a two-year deal
- Christian Wood revealed that Head Coach Darvin Ham called him every day during free agency
- Christian Wood says he already has a good relationship with Darvin Ham
The Los Angeles Lakers made a move in September to sign free agent Christian Wood to a two-year contract. Free agency began on June 30th, but it took the Lakers more than two months to sign Wood to a deal.
There was some speculation about how much the team wanted him, but it seems both parties are excited for Christian Wood to be a Laker. And Wood explained that even before he was signed, Head Coach Darvin Ham was constantly in touch.
“He (Darvin Ham) called me every day in free agency, I can say that now,” Wood said. “Believe it or not, we have a good relationship and I think that was a really big thing for me.”
He added a few words about what makes Darvin Ham so great too, saying, “Just having that communication with the coach, where you can just talk, personable. He’s a player’s coach as well, so just having that on my side is great.”

Christian Wood was on the Milwaukee Bucks for one season in 2018-19, during which time Darvin Ham was an Assistant Coach at the franchise. Both of them joined the team in 2018, so they likely developed a good bond and it already seems to be paying off for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Christian Wood Can Produce Big Numbers For The Los Angeles Lakers
While he’s not a big fan of playing the center position, Christian Wood at 6’10 provides the size the Los Angeles Lakers need alongside Anthony Davis.
His shot-blocking ability is elite, and the 27-year-old can also score in bunches as a weapon on the offensive end. The Los Angeles Lakers could get great production from Wood if they can unlock his potential.
Despite things not working out for him on the Dallas Mavericks, Christian Wood averaged 16.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game for them last season.
With LeBron James now on the same team as him and his ability to bring the most out of his teammates, Christian Wood could prove to be an underrated signing that has a big impact on the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Los Angeles Lakers Are Very Confident About Christian Wood
Christian Wood has all the talent to be a massive success at the NBA level. But the fact remains that since he came into the league in 2015, Wood has already been on seven different franchises and none have kept him for the long term.
The Los Angeles Lakers are his 8th NBA home and questions have been raised about his attitude as well as his fit in the locker room. The Dallas Mavericks seemed done with him by the end of last season, which isn’t a very good sign.
None of this seems to matter much to the Los Angeles Lakers though, and they are confident that taking a gamble on Christian Wood will pay off for them in the long run.
“With head coach Darvin Ham, James, and Davis setting the tone and culture, the Lakers are optimistic that Wood will buy into the team in a way he’s never fully bought into his previous stops,” a report from The Athletic read.
If Christian Wood buys in, the Los Angeles Lakers will have all the pieces they need to make a massive run at the NBA championship. Darvin Ham being so eager to get him in bodes well in that regard.
