The 2023 NBA All-Star game took place in Utah, featuring the biggest superstars in the league. Apart from current NBA superstars, the day also featured some legends of the sport as usual.

Speaking of which, Utah Jazz legend Karl Malone was present in the audience. Malone spent most of his career wearing the Utah Jazz jersey. So it wasn’t a surprise that the NBA invited Malone to the All-Star game taking place in Utah.

Malone had a great skill set that he built carefully over the years with a lot of hard work. His skill set featured a plethora of things, including flashy dunks. Even among those flashy dunks, his most iconic dunk is the one where he puts his hand behind his head while dunking the basketball.

The Story Behind Karl Malone’s Iconic Dunk

During the 2023 Slam Dunk contest, Karl Malone was present as one of the judges. But our focus today is not on how he did as a judge. Instead, in a short interview with NBA insider Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson, Malone revealed the story behind his iconic dunk.

Via Bally Sports:

“I have no idea. It was at home the first time I did it. It was just a regular dunk, and I was just on a breakaway and just wanted to see If I could do it and I did it and it’s called the hammer dunk.”

Well, as per Malone, he never intended it to be an iconic dunk. But the reaction from the crowd was simply too good for Malone to keep trying it again and again.

Even today, when a player tries to pull off a dunk where they put their hand behind their head, people instantly connect it to the Utah Jazz legend. Moves like these truly separate the normal players from the ones that always have a place in the hearts of the fans.
