Russell Westbrook is no longer in his prime, but he is still a solid point guard that excels at facilitating, rebounding, and slashing. He recently signed with the Los Angeles Clippers via the buyout market.
Even though Russell Westbrook is a talented player, things have not gone well for the Los Angeles Clippers after signing them. They are 0-4 with the point guard, and some have blamed him for their record. However, Kawhi Leonard refused to blame the point guard, claiming that Westbrook has nothing to do with the team “losing games”. Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints relayed the news.
“I don’t think that has anything to do with us losing games,” said Kawhi Leonard. “We got players that’s playing that could win these games, we were up pretty much in that Sacramento game we were up late and tonight we were up at halftime, and last game we had a lead, so we just got to be able to sustain the lead.”
There is no doubt that Russell Westbrook wasn’t the direct cause of those four losses, and losing is a team-wide responsibility. Hopefully, we see the Clippers figure things out and bounce back with a winning streak. Westbrook hasn’t had a good record as a starter in recent memory though, so perhaps making him the sixth man could be a good solution for the Clippers.
Currently, Russell Westbrook is putting up 14.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG, and 8.5 APG for the Los Angeles Clippers, while shooting 45.7% from the field. Ty Lue has utilized him more as a screener, and Westbrook has generally looked under control and seems willing to accept his role.
The Warriors’ Sagging Of Russell Westbrook May Have Affected Him Mentally
The Golden State Warriors brutally sagged off Russell Westbrook when playing against the Los Angeles Clippers, daring him to shoot. Draymond Green suggested that this can be tough on a player mentally, making the player second-guess shooting.
“The game plan worked for us tonight. We got Russ to miss some shots. I think when you have a game plan like that I know everyone will always judge Russ’ jump shot—but what that does to you mentally is tough,” Green said. “I think it was more mental than his shot. He’s been shooting the ball well. I think he’s shooting the three at 33 or 34 percent. But mentally, that can get tough. I thought we did a good job of sticking with the game plan, and we was able to muck it up on the defensive side. It ended up working out for us.”
It is quite likely that Russell Westbrook will be a poor 3PT shooter for the rest of his career. However, it is key for him to still shoot wide-open 3PT shots, to at least attempt to keep the defense honest.
Hopefully, we see Russell Westbrook be able to figure things out with the Los Angeles Clippers. They are definitely a contending team, and we’ll see how they end up doing in the future.
