As far as most basketball fans are concerned, the 1992 Dream Team is the greatest roster ever assembled. Led by Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, the Dream Team took the NBA to an international stage and inspired millions worldwide.

But the Dream Team isn’t the only star-studded roster Team USA has put out. Even the 2012 Team was made up of incredible names, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Kevin Durant, to name a few. And in 2012, Bryant said their roster could have beaten the Dream Team. This led to an epic response from Larry Bird.

As reported by Inquisitr, Bird said: “They probably could. I haven’t played in 20 years and we’re all old now.”

The implication here is obvious, Larry Bird didn’t think that the 2012 team could have beaten the Dream Team if both were in their prime. The response is classic Larry Legend, his humor has always been dry and sarcastic. Who would win out in a matchup like this is a big hypothetical, and there’s no natural way to decide that.

In Kobe Bryant’s defense, the team had some elite names on it in 2012. Chris Pual, Russell, Westbrook, James Harden, and a young Anthony Davis were all on that team as well. While the Dream Team had Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley, and David Robinson, they certainly wouldn’t sweep a series against the 2012 team either.

What Did Kobe Bryant Say About The Dream Team?

The wild thing is that Kobe Bryant didn’t say that the 2012 USA Team could have won in a series against the Dream Team either. He contended that they could win a game against the legendary 1992 squad, which isn’t necessarily a bad take.

“It would be a tough one, but I think we would pull it out. People who think we can’t beat that team for one game, they are crazy. To sit there and say we can’t, it’s ludicrous. We can beat them one time.”

He would go on to admit that the Dream Team was better as well. It would be amazing to see these teams go at one another, not that it would ever be possible. Larry Bird pointed out exactly why this conversation will always remain hypothetical.
