The Miami Heat have been operating in these playoffs as one of the greatest underdogs the NBA has ever seen. What’s incredible is that they’re doing this without one of their primary scoring options.

Tyler Herro has been hurt for the entirety of this magical Heat playoff run, but he is inching closer and closer to a return. Chris Haynes has said that Herro is ramping up to a return, something the Heat expect by Game 3 of the Finals.

Herro averaged 20.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.2 assists during the regular season and will add a much-needed scoring punch to the Heat’s roster. Miami has been dependent on players like Caleb Martin, Duncan Robinson, and Gabe Vincent scoring in ways they didn’t during the regular season, so getting Herro back should be positive.

Don’t Mix With A Winning Formula

The Heat have won three playoff series against higher seeds without Tyler Herro, which goes to show that there is something to be said about how the team has played since Herro’s injury. Their defensive improvement was noticeable, even when they were playing the likes of Duncan Robinson. Can Herro come back from his month-long absence and instantly match the tone and aggression that the Heat have played with?

It’s unlikely that Herro returns to play a major role, with him likely being brought off the bench to see how much court rust he has to wear off. This would be doubly beneficial, as Herro can easily lead a bench unit as the primary scorer, winning Sixth Man of the Year last season for excelling in that role. If his shot is not hitting, Miami may just be forced to shut him down instead of bringing an out-of-rhythm player into a hornets’ nest.
