Most NBA fans know that basketball as we know it was invented in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by James Naismith. The history of modern basketball begins there, and the game slowly grew in popularity during the 20th century before it eventually became a multi-billion dollar industry in the 21st century.
The Boston Celtics organization has been a massive name in basketball for well over half a century. But one of their current stars, Jaylen Brown, has now questioned if James Naismith invented the game by asking the question about his sneakers. In the process, he misspelled Naismith though, leading to quite a few jokes at his expense.

There were lots of comments attacking the question itself, but a lot more were trolling Brown for his poor spelling. One comment cleverly addressed both those things.
It wasn’t really Neismith. Hope this helps!

Jaylen Brown was teammates with Aaron Nesmith for a while, who was traded to the Indiana Pacers in a deal that saw the Celtics get back Malcolm Brogdon. And one fan joked that these shoes were referring to the former Celtics man.
Is he criticizing James Naismith or former teammate Aaron Nesmith?

The Boston Celtics lost Game 3 against the Atlanta Hawks. And funnily enough, after pictures of the shoes came out, one fan predicted that’s exactly what would happen after Brown misspelled Naismith’s name.

Sneakers like this with incredible illustrations that are high concept take a long time to design. A lot of effort goes into ensuring every detail is perfect. So as one fan pointed out, it’s very hilarious that Brown and his team all forgot to notice the basic error.
No way they put in all this work into customizing the shoe but couldn’t be bothered to check the spelling of Naismith 😭 https://t.co/a5XZWu7Zv2

In 3 games against the Atlanta Hawks, Jaylen Brown has averaged just 20.7 points. The Celtics are likely to win against the Hawks, but it’s still quite something that Atlanta managed to take Game 3 against them. Every move Brown makes will be scrutinized heavily at the moment, considering the speculation surrounding his future.
What Was Jaylen Brown Referring To When He Questioned James Naismith’s Status As The Inventor Of Basketball?
The question Jaylen Brown asked was noticed by a lot of people, and the Mayan or Aztec illustrations on them made his implication clear. The ancient Mesoamerican civilizations played a game that had hoops on a wall, and some have suggested that basketball was derived from that tradition.
However, descriptions of that game show it was quite different from modern basketball, so James Naismith will remain the inventor for most people. This is an odd tangent, but considering that Jaylen Brown is very socially conscious, it is also unsurprising that it came from him.
