Gregg Popovich is arguably the greatest coach in NBA history. While the modern era has also given us coaches like Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, and Steve Kerr, who are comparable to Popovich in terms of how they oversaw dynasties. However, Popovich single-handedly changed the culture of the Spurs into a winning franchise and won 5 championships over 2 decades with a similar core of players.
After decades of success, the Spurs now have the youngest and possibly the worst lineup in the league this season. Popovich safely reminded people in tune with the Spurs’ media day to not go to Vegas and put money on their team winning the NBA title.

Popovich set an NBA record by leading the Spurs to the playoffs without a single miss for 22 consecutive seasons, which ended in 2019 after the Spurs failed to impress with DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge in their second season. The Spurs haven’t made it to the playoffs since and have fully committed to a rebuild by trading away All-Star Dejounte Murray this offseason.
Can Gregg Popovich Successfully Rebuild The Spurs At This Point In His Career?
Gregg Popovich has been an NBA coach for a very long time and many have wondered when the 70-year-old coaching veteran will call it quits on his career. That doesn’t look to be happening anytime soon, so Popovich will try to make this Spurs core the foundation for the future of the squad.
Keldon Johnson is arguably their featured piece now but there are talented youngsters like Joshua Primo, Devin Vassell, and 2022 first-round pick, Jeremy Sochan who will also want to get big opportunities.
There is no indication of when Pop will choose to retire. He has already started the rebuild and helped some of these players develop over the last 2 seasons and it’s a process he is excited to continue this season. Hopefully, we also get to see Pop complete this rebuild and possibly bring the Spurs to contention again before he retires from the game.
