Coming into this season, the Detroit Pistons were supposed to be among the most improved teams in the association. With Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and Saddiq Bey (among others), they have a solid young core that they are hoping will develop into stars.

Sadly for the Pistons, it’s clear that their team is just not close to contention yet. With a 9-28 record through 37 games, they are the worst team in the league this season.

The good news is, it has the Pistons in a position to land a high draft pick in the upcoming draft. In fact, according to ESPN’s latest mock draft, they project the Pistons to get Wemby with the no. 1 overall pick.

Victor Wembanyama has cemented himself as the overwhelming favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA draft behind an MVP-caliber season in France. But after him? Increasing uncertainty.

Scoot Henderson, the presumed No. 2 pick, hasn’t played since Nov. 18 after spending three weeks in concussion protocol following a nasal fracture, causing him to miss the G League Winter Showcase, which was heavily attended by NBA decision-makers.

With a potential roster of Cunningham, Bey, Killian Hayes, Jalen Duren, and Victor Wembanyama, the Pistons could be a real force in the East next season and for years to come. As some Pistons fans push for the team to tank for Victor, there is a good reason why they should think twice before going that route.

Victor Wembanyama Breaks His Silence On NBA Teams Taking For His Services

On the matter of tanking for Wembanyama, it’s no secret that the race to the bottom is more competitive than ever. But if you ask the young prospect himself about the practice, he’ll say he’s not a fan.

Wembanyama has also issued a warning about this, criticizing teams that tank in order to have a better shot at drafting him. The 2023 NBA Draft is already a war, but Wembanyama is trying to put water on that fire. Talking with Le Parisien (via Basket News), the teenager had this to say:

“Tanking? It’s a weird strategy,” Wembanyama addressed the issue. “I find it unreasonable, and I try not to think about it. I also heard that the NBA considered changing a few rules for me, but that doesn’t concern me.”

So, if the Pistons want Vic, they should be careful not to make their pursuit too obvious. But they are bad enough on their own anyway without having to tank.

This summer will undoubtedly be a huge one for the Pistons and for the NBA. If Wembanyama is able to live up to the hype, he could be a player who changes the NBA hierarchy for years to come. We’ll find out for ourselves before too long…
